I think Hub (or it might have been someone else) suggested that you get offered a list when you sign up & you pic your topics and they make up your active conversations from then on (with an option to change them later iyswim)

The way the filter works is to have variables tacked onto the end of the URL

So to exclude the buying and selling threads you add "&nobuy=y" to the end of the URL. To include SN threads you add "&sn=y" to the end of the URL. And so on! Of course this will only work with the ones that tech has already set up, so you couldn't for instance make your own up (at least I don't think you could) e.g. "&camping=n" to exclude camping threads.
