Users on XP question... please...

My dss broke my computer, I had to do a complete re-install. I set up users for each of us but now when the computer is turned on instead of going to the 'welcome' screen with the 'users' listed it goes straight onto the administrator 'user' and the only way to get to the other users is to go through the control panel or log off administrator.

What have I done wrong and how do I correct it please?

Go to control panel and then user accounts.

Select 'choose the way users log on and off'

What option is ticked on that screen?

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 11:13

Thanks for the tip 2shoes.

Go into user accounts (on the control panel ), and put a password on the administrator account. That way when you switch the computer on it will prompt for the admin password, but those who don't know it will have to click on the other accounts to use the computer.

SamhainWitch, its set to use welcome screen and use fast user switching, so I don't understand why its doing it?

SamhainWitch · 19/10/2006 11:17

Untick the fast switch option and see if that fixes it.

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 11:18

fuzzywuzzy, I want the computer to go straight onto the welcome screen, but when you switch the computer on it automatically goes on to the administrator settings. I want to get rid of it (I think) [confused emoticon]

Gong to try that SamhainWitch, will have to restart the computer to see if it has worked, so back in a min...

Didn't work, I can't understand what I have done wrong?

OP posts:
SamhainWitch · 19/10/2006 11:30

Have to go to work now, will put thinking cap on and report back if I think of anything else.

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 11:36

Thanks, I can't put the fast switch option back on now either!

This is driving me mad (mad and bald, oh dear!)

I don't think you can completely get rid of the admin user, you need to sometimes use admin when you make changes, other user accounts if specified will only have limited access....

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 11:41

fuzzywuzzy before the re-install when you switched the computer on it went straight to the welcome screen with the list of users, now it goes straight to the administrator one, then you have to log off to get to the other users iyswim.

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 11:42

BTW I have set myself as an administrator account so I should be able to make the changes I want.

OP posts:
fuzzywuzzy · 19/10/2006 11:51

Go into user accounts (as admin user), and tick both
Click change the way users log on or off
and then ensure both boxes are ticked
ie use the welcome screen
and ensure fast switch.

I'd also put a password on the admin account so nobody but you can use it.

I've had to do it as husbands nephew decided ot play aorund with my internet security system and completely crashed everything a while back.

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 11:56

I've done that fuzzywuzzy, it still doesn't work....

Oh, my head hurts

Squirrel3 · 19/10/2006 12:59

Sorry for the delay in replying fuzzywuzzy (great name btw) still trying to install stuff, yes I have restarted my computer several times as I am re-installing loads of stuff that requires a restart. I've even shut it down completely.
