Ad loading makes site unusably slow

Firefox on a Mac.

Site has slowed down tremendously, constantly getting spinning cursor, can't load threads or type easily as it takes forever to show up on the screen, because it's busy trying to load some ad. Lots of the b.scorecard.research and names like that listed at the bottom of the browser where it shows what it's trying to load. I can't see all the ads so don't know what it's trying to do after that is loaded, but it is doing something in the background, possibly autoplay videos, I don't know, but it takes up so much resource that it makes the page unusable. It has taken 5 minutes just to get this message typed. No other sites or applications running, and no problems with internet connection or any other sites.

Sorry to hear this. How very tedious! We'll pass this on to Tech. In the meantime, have you tried using Chrome? That often seems to be a bit more whizzy....

buddhasbelly · 14/01/2015 22:23

sorry if this sounds very condescending but have you checked in firefox settings if there are any "extensions" lurking on your browser? I know you've said you don't have the problem with other sites but could be possible cause? sorry again if you are completely computer savvy then just ignore me!

Yes, try Chrome and then install an adblocker.

I haven't tried using chrome, which I could do. But the problem is just the last day or two. And there is an adblocker already with Firefox - wondering if that was the problem, actually. This morning it seems somewhat improved compared to last night; perhaps different ads! I've had similar before, and it's often the connection to twitter/pinterest/all those other things that seem to load on the page that make it hang.

Thanks Runaway. At the moment this seems to be a problem at your end rather than ours (as we're not getting lots of reports of problems) but we'll keep an eye out.
