Blimey - Facebook has removed our picture of a baby being breastfed...

Many of you will remember the recent kerfuffle involving a breastfeeding mother being told by Claridge's staff to cover herself (and her baby) up with a napkin. It generated lots of discussion on MN, and we duly posted a link to the thread on our Facebook page, accompanied by this image of a baby being breastfed.

We were more than a bit taken aback to discover this morning that the post has been removed - apparently for failing to follow Facebook's community standards. Find out more over here - and if you think this is as bonkers as we do, do feel free to share!

OP posts:
EhricJinglingHisBallsOnHigh · 17/12/2014 18:50

I reported a paedophile page with images of pre pubescent girls in underwear including a child showing her crotch with splayed legs in a sexualised pose but as she had knickers on it didn't break guidelines. Bullshit.

ThatWasThat · 17/12/2014 19:58

I reported a picture depicting a dog expressing disgust at 'what lesbians eat' but apparently it broke no rules

maizieD · 17/12/2014 20:00

I've shared it. What a lovely picture it is.

I hope more press pick up the story.

Linskibinski · 17/12/2014 20:36

I reported a young child lying on a hospital bed with half its head blown off, but that image didn't break guidelines. So, living baby being held closely whilst being fed versus dead innocent child murdered in a war zone. I know which image I find more offensive. Shocking. Xmas AngryXmas Angry

Wigeon · 17/12/2014 20:48

Agree this is ridiculous. Is there a way a Facebook user (ie MNet in this instance) can challenge decisions to remove their pictures? Could you just repost it, along with a copy-and-paste of Facebook's own guidelines on pictures of breastfeeding?

BonjourMinou · 17/12/2014 21:14

I reported the same page as Ehric following a thread I saw on here. They did nothing Angry.

They're happy for videos of beheadings to remain, thankfully I didn't see one of those, I would have been extremely distressed. I also reported a distressing video of a woman hitting a baby and several racist posts, none of which break facebook's guidelines.

But a beautiful picture of a woman breastfeeding a baby? Can't have that. FFS.

This just makes me all the more determined to breastfeed as ostentatiously as possible when baby number 2 arrives. Is there a way to make FB defend their actions? I don't understand why they can't see that there is no common sense whatsoever behind their actions. Angry Sad

MyOneandYoni · 17/12/2014 21:46

Ok, everyone, I would like you to adopt the Shakira song, but the lyrics are changed a leetle bit...

Ahem, here goes...

Look at my breasts
They're ostentatious
Look at my hips
They're big and wide
Look at my body
Feeding my baby
Fulfilling a need and all desires...

Aw wo wo wo wo wo wo
Aw wo wo wo wo ooh-oh...

Oh, no, you can't look, can you, BECAUSE FACEBOOK TOOK IT DOWN!

MyOneandYoni · 17/12/2014 21:48

Actually, am surprised how naive Mumsnet has been on this - I had my breastfeeding pics taken down years ago - I thought everyone knew that FB were breastfeeding fascists and pictures of breast fulfilling their primary function were oh so scary, whereas beheadings/bullying/pornography was hunky dory??

Linskibinski · 17/12/2014 21:50

myoneandyoni a work of genius! Xmas Grin

HaveTeaWillSurvive · 17/12/2014 22:32

I am really Angry about this.

I tend to ignore the guff I see on Facebook but the other month reported a picture I was really shocked by, just flashed up on one of those lad type feeds as someone had commented on it, won't go in to the details as I was horrified but was a hammered girl and two blokes and IMO was on very dodgy ground with regards to 'consenting'.

They were straight back saying they wouldn't remove it as it didn't breach their policies - but a gorgeous breast feeding baby does!!

WTF Angry

GreenGateGeorge · 17/12/2014 22:55

Had this argument with my mum the other day. She is one of the people who think people who breastfeed should hide. My take on the matter: if you think breastfeeding mums should be "discreet" or "not ostentatious" or "courteous", then you obviously think it is rude. Which is the rude part? If you see a baby eating baby food from a jar is that rude? If you see a baby taking a bottle is that rude? My guess is no.... so that means it's breasts that are rude. Why are breasts rude? Because you equate them with sex? So is it breasts or just nipples? Because if you think that if you see a nude baby girl's bare chest and you equate that with sex we know what that makes you... so is it just grown women? The bigger the better? Basically you get off on lactating breasts then... Hmmmm sounds like your problem to me! Personally I think that woman in Claridges looked more discreet before they plonked a great big bloody tablecloth over her. Why not just erect a tent around her with a big sign on the entrance saying "CAUTION:BAPS OUT! MAY CAUSE OFFENCE!"

What MN needs to do is sort out a way we can connect with each other and share infirmation and photos etc. then we can break free of the tyranny of FB. DO IT PLEASE, it is your duty.

PacificDogwood · 17/12/2014 23:10

Could all BFing MNers who also use FB flood the place with ostentatious BFing photos? Grin

Bonkers.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/12/2014 23:14

yes, and as widgeon suggested c&p FBs guidance on BF which they seem to have forgotten.

Funny thing is that I have had this breastfeeding Dd photo up for nearly 4 years and they haven't touched it.

"Actually, am surprised how naive Mumsnet has been on this - I had my breastfeeding pics taken down years ago - I thought everyone knew that FB were breastfeeding fascists"

But supposedly they'd had a change of heart relatively recently and were now all in favour of BF photos. Or so they told everyone.

HowsTheSerenity · 18/12/2014 02:05

What would happen if you posted pornography involving breastfeeding, a bit of extreme violence and lots of people using offensive and racist language?

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 18/12/2014 06:16

family photos of a child breastfeeding

Is that their loophole here? I assume it isn't a family photo.

MyOneandYoni · 18/12/2014 07:01

Linskibinski I thank you.
Do you think we can make it a Christmas Number one?

GreenEyedMonster14 · 18/12/2014 07:14

I report loads of Muslim hatred on Facebook. Really explicit stuff and it always comes back as 'this did not break our community guidelines.'

How the fuck not?

And yet this picture gets removed? I just do not get it.

merrymouse · 18/12/2014 07:33

That is really odd - it's sounds a bit deliberate to remove a breastfeeding picture from a Mumsnet Facebook page - it's as though they want things to kick off.

merrymouse · 18/12/2014 07:37

Although I suspect they would say the problem is that you can see a small, rather inoffensive bit of areola.
