Mobile site strife? Come and post here

Hullo everyone,

There are several threads about the mobile site being a bit wonky (technical term that), so we thought we'd start a thread to keep everyone's comments in one place, so we can see what's what.

It seems from the other threads, a few people were having problems with Galaxy S4 - is anyone else?

Please do post saying what you're using (eg iphone 5, safari, ios 7), and we'll try and make things run a bit more smoothly.

@ThomasLynn

HTC one m7, I'm getting redirected to a "you have won an iPhone" page instead of whatever tasty thread I was after. Took me six tries to get here! Am on chrome.

Hi ThomasLynn,

Well that sounds rather annoying!

Is it still happening today? We haven't had any other reports about it, but we'll get our Tech team on the case if so.

Hi there,
Sorry about the ads, let us look into that and get back to you.

RowanMumsnet · 12/12/2014 15:36

Sorry all - SNAFU at our end about who was looking after this one.

Right: on the ads - we absolutely take on board that some of you hate the ads as they currently are, but our data for all mobile visits shows that neither of the ad placements we've tested so far has had a measurable effect on the numbers of people using the app or on the length of the average session.

That said, obviously it's not our aim to annoy. We are looking at testing a third option (in which the ads fade out after a certain period of time) but it's going to take some tech development work, so for now the ads are likely to stay where they are.

Will go through and try to come back with useful responses to other glitches soon.

Thanks
MNHQ

@AgentProvocateur

I keep getting this red flashing envelope at the top of my screen. It's really annoying - either this one, or another "you have one new message" flashing one. They're nothing to do with MN PMs.

Agent, that does look like an MN PM notification to us - are you sure you don't have a new one?

RowanMumsnet · 12/12/2014 16:12

@Lovecat

I got a new phone today (galaxy s5) and having downloaded the android app and signed in, all I get if i click through from any of the main page icons is a blank screen with a ribbon ad at the bottom of the page. Can get on via the Internet but I prefer to use the app when on my phone.

Is this a known problem,MN?

Sorry Lovecat - the app is increasingly creaky. We're close to testing the beta version of the brand new app now - if you could bear to use the mobile site for now it might be easier on your blood pressure.

RowanMumsnet · 12/12/2014 16:14

@Madamecastafiore

Am on iPhone 5s and other than titles loading but not threads I often get a cannot connect box come up.

Only recently links are not showing either. It's got to the stage where I think everyone else is seeing lovely things except me!! Wink

Mind you both the above happens on my iPad too.

I'm using the mobile site.

Hi Mme - this sounds like a connectivity/poor connection problem at your end. Have you checked your broadband performance? Might be a good place to start.

RowanMumsnet · 12/12/2014 16:51

@LineRunner

Sorry that sounded terribly terse Grin

I've done very little flashing recently, honest guv

RowanMumsnet · 12/12/2014 16:52

@JassyRadlett

Agent, that does look like an MN PM notification to us - are you sure you don't have a new one?

Rowan, it isn't - it's a banner ad that's designed to fool people into thinking they have a PM or similar as it looks like other sites' interfaces.

Really irritating and dishonest advertising, getting clickthroughs by pretending they're something else and then being hard to navigate back from.

Ah right, apologies. If anyone can get a company name or the URL that the ad directs you to, it will be a lot easier for us to find it and block it.

RowanMumsnet · 12/12/2014 16:53

@LittleBearPad

Right: on the ads - we absolutely take on board that some of you hate the ads as they currently are, but our data for all mobile visits shows that neither of the ad placements we've tested so far has had a measurable effect on the numbers of people using the app or on the length of the average session.

But Rowab what choice do we have. Using the desktop site on an iPhone/other mobile isn't really an option. Why were they changed back to the top of the screen. Inserting them in the thread at least meant you could scroll past them without them being permanently annoying.

We're testing at the mo - putting the ads in a variety of positions to see which ones the users hate least... we're still in the process and we'll be testing out a new position, but as said below we need to do some tech dev work first.

In terms of choice - see your point - we will be doing beta testing on the NEW APP soon though

DawnMumsnet · 13/12/2014 13:40

@LineRunner

I am also wondering why the site is so slow. I have fast broadband and everything else is fine, except for the super-slow MN mobile site - and the problem definitely coincided with the reintroduction of the ad at the top of the page. It takes so bloody long to load.

Hi LineRunner, re. the slowness - can you check your preferences to see how many messages are displayed? It could be that yours is set to 'show 1,000 messages'. If you switch to 50 messages max, the speed should improve dramatically.

Everyone else, please rest assured that our Tech team are looking into the individual issues being raised on this thread. We'll be posting any news or suggestions they have as soon as we're able.

RowanMumsnet · 17/12/2014 12:31

@Suddengeekgirl

There's a few bad ads this morning.

The O2 one and one for the Canary Islands are very flicky.

The envelope one is awful! The pics show where it clicks through to.

Brilliant, thanks for this - hopefully we can get it blocked now.

ChristmasKateMumsnet · 18/12/2014 14:57

@LittleBlueHermit

The mobile site seems to have temporarily dissappeared. I'm being redirected to the desktop site.

Using firefox on a Samsung galaxy s4 mini.

Noo! It's still there for us (I'm on an iphone) - is anyone else finding the mobile site has gone AWOL?

RowanMumsnet · 19/12/2014 09:56

@MrsKringle

And to add, "MNHQ have commented on this thread" doesn't do anything. The word "commented" is in blue but it's not a link.

Thanks MrsKringle - this should be fixed now.

We also think we've found and blocked the scammy 'DM' ad - there were loads of sources for it, which is why it took us so long to track them all down.

The block will take a few hours to take effect, but if you continue to see this ad from Friday afternoon onwards please let us know and we'll try to zap it again. Many apologies that it's taken so long.
