How are troll hunters dealt with?

xalyssx · 20/10/2014 11:09

I have aspergers, so quite often the posts I write are quite rambling. I like to use MN because sometimes I'm not sure about something, so I ask for help on here. Unfortunately, as I sometimes appear to not know what is going on in my own posts, I get accused of being a troll. I know that this is against talk guidelines, but I was wondering how it is dealt with? It's getting to the point where I was crying when reading my latest thread, as I can't help the way I word things, but people are still covering my thread in hurtful disbelief Sad

OP posts:

That's a shame Xal. To be honest threads that 'ramble' for me are more likely to ring true, if that's any comfort.

I agree that building up a posting history is generally the way to gain trust, although obviously being a regular doesn't preclude one from being a troll.

I disagree that you should stick to the sn chat boards though, assuming your issue isn't sn related. It's a slippery slope to go down to tell someone that they shouldn't post on ibu/chat because people are more brutal etc - all of mn should be accepting of all posts - there shouldn't be an unwritten rule about not posting on x or y because of responses. If responses are harsher on some parts then it is the responsibility of those responding, not those posting to deal with that.

Tbh, if there is consistent troll hunting on one of your threads I would be inclined to report to mn hq and they may well come on and have a word. Unfortunately trolls atm are so prolific that more posts seem to be being deleted than not, so an element of "troll hunting" seems to be in order iyswim.

There are so many trolls on MN ATM I wouldn't believe a thread even if I started it myself.

Fairenuff · 21/10/2014 00:31

It doesn't matter if you ramble, as long as the whole 'story' (for want of a better word) makes sense. If you mix up details it starts to look odd.

HaroldLloyd · 21/10/2014 09:21

I would report the thread to MNHQ. I have seen them post on a thread that a poster is genuine.

Stick with the same name and people will get to know your style.

But like usual said, this place is so full of trolls people are just very suspicious.

That's the real problem.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 21/10/2014 09:25

I'm sorry you feel this way, xalyssx. MN has asked people to report suspicions to them rather than start making accusations on threads. I know this isn't a perfect solution but I find trollhunting on the thread really unpleasant. Trolls post to get attention so it seems best not to give them any.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 21/10/2014 09:37

I've just had a look at the thread you started yesterday. Some people have been absolutely vile to you. It might have turned out a bit better if you'd said at the beginning that you had Asperger's but frankly there is no excuse for the outright nastiness you've been subjected to.

Thanks
DazzleII · 21/10/2014 12:09

We all get that kind of treatment, xalyssx; at the moment there's an obsession in people's minds that every other poster is a wannabe novelist and is just trying out plotlines. If you say you have Aspergers in your OP, you may gain some protection in the future, but you shouldn't have to. We should all be protected from that kind of treatment, whether AS or NT.

wooooosualsuspect · 21/10/2014 13:11

At the moment threads are being deleted all over the shop for trolling.

No wonder everyone is suspicious.

Bewooohooove · 21/10/2014 16:05

I've reported 2 this afternoon because as we say in Scotland 'they're reekin'
I hope I'm not becoming too cynical but I'm starting to disbelieve nearly everything at the moment.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 22/10/2014 00:06

Please report anything you think we should look at/be aware of.
We will take a look
Thankseverso

CherryDolphin · 22/10/2014 14:04

If you don't mind me asking, but why is it bad if most of your posts are on Chat and AIBU? Admittedly those are the places that I post (mostly), are you more likely to be thought of as a troll if you post in those places?

xalyssx I think I know which thread you're talking about in which case it seems that those posts in question have been deleted. I think the best thing to do in this kind of situation is just keep reporting them and ignore them and try not to let them get to you in the meantime. Which is hard I know.

I too have asperger's and I would hate to think of something like this happening to me.

smokepole · 22/10/2014 16:10

In all likely hood I am about to get diagnosed with Aspergers/Dyspraxia within the next 10 days or so. Xalyssx. Every single post I have written has been said to have been a "Troll" thread so I know where you are coming from. On every thread at least one person has said Troll to me with other people jumping on the bandwagon , calling my spelling, punctuation , grammar and use of commas ETC. Other people have questioned whether I have Aspergers because they say they know someone and they are nothing like me or my posting style.

Cherry. Watch out for people questioning whether you have Aspergers , if they disagree with you ?.

Can some-one tell me which thread this is as I have not read OPs original thread.

DazzleII · 22/10/2014 22:17

Chat and AIBU are where most of the troll hunters hang out most of the time. Avoid them, and you may be safer.

BeyondPreparedForHell · 25/10/2014 15:19

I also very probably have asd, cant get a referral though to confirm it (long story)

However i couldnt disagree more with smokepoles post, not once in over five years here have i ever been called a troll, nor had anyone say i am making up asd issues. Even when posting in chat and aibu.

JoanHickson · 25/10/2014 15:26

I am sorry that happenshe OP. I am rambly in general so can identify with the cruelty that goes on.
