Please check this thread. A longtime poster is in real trouble.

Can you trace her and get RL help to her?

MNHQ have commented on the thread.

Here is a question - if someone were to phone the police and say they have read a worrying post on a social networking forum that requires an immediate response - would they be able to track down the poster? I just wonder if it might get a quicker response than trying to contact MNHQ (although happily on this occasion it looks like the OP has been able to reach out herself for help).

I just wondered about if something like this happens again...

InfinitySeven · 19/10/2014 23:18

They'd need MNHQ to provide IP addresses. You can then be easily located.

It's possible to do it without MNHQ, but it'd likely take days.

Oakmaiden · 19/10/2014 23:25

I wonder if a phonecall to MNHQ would get through quicker than reporting/posting?

Just musing...

ChippingInLatteLover · 19/10/2014 23:30

As you can see, reporting the thread is far more efficient that posting in site stuff.

There's a fine line between helping and over stepping the line, it's not an easy one for MNHQ.

The OP was actually freaked out about being 'traced' so I'm not sure it would be a good thing for MN to do, because it might stop others in the same situation posting.

Difficult one.

Oakmaiden · 19/10/2014 23:35

It is a difficult one. I don't think anyone would want to just sit on the sidelines and "watch" when someone is in such despair - and it can be so hard to reach out yourself when you are in that place.

Is it wrong to help someone if they don't want to be helped? I don't know. This is turning much more philosophical than I had intended.

Oakmaiden · 19/10/2014 23:36

And probably not the time or lace for such musing. I am sorry.

ArsenicChaseScream · 19/10/2014 23:43

There was a situation recently where police turned up at the home of a non-MNer to prevent her suicide. She was rather taken aback, as she was not suicidal and came on here to discuss how the police had come to be at the wrong house.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for this (and to all of you who reported the thread to us last night). We can see that the OP's husband has posted to say he's been in contact with her mental health team - but nevertheless we will keep a close eye on the thread.
