What happened to the old NCT thread which I think was titled "The NCT: Has it outlived its usefulness?"

It was a stonker.

Actually no it wasn't. It was a chat thread called "Has the NCT outlived its usefulness? (Discuss)" but it's been deleted now.

Are deleted chat threads deleted forever from everywhere?

They are yes. They go after three months. There's just too many to keep. We have copies of course because we back everything up, but they are gone from the site.

That's what I meant - is there any way of reposting a copy of said NCT thread into, say, Other Subjects?

It was SUCH a good thread

I would very much enjoy reading it again if that is possible at any point

I think it was a very good example of MN debate

Didn't read it. What was so good about it?

There was a lot of thoughtful debate on a lot of different issues

Also lots of mud-slinging I expect
