Morning all,

And welcome to the new thread!
Grin

As SarahMumsnet said at the end of the last thread, we have Tech on call for fixes this weekend, and various MNHQers will be here to talk and help wherever we can.

We'll be adding to the rolling list of bugs, glitches and dislikes (see below), so please keep the feedback coming. Do remember to list which device you're using, which operating system, and which browser, so we can identify the specific issues.

Right then, who's first?

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:28

@TeenyfTroon

I too prefer the line spacing in your quotations. Though I have wondered why the last line of each quote has a larger space - is it the quotation marks which force this? Maybe you could try somewhere between the two? The disclaimer/explanation text at the beginning of threads (eg Chat) has the same line spacing as ordinary posts (I think!) and this seems particularly unnecessary. Btw, my magnifying glass is less wayward tonight, but the bottom blue bar has taken to wandering as I scroll down! (iPhone 3GS, Safari, iOS 6)

Hi there TreenyfTroon, noted and disclaimer size is on our agenda for design chat.

Glad to hear it about magnifying glass, though hmm about bottom buttons - that doesn't sound right! We'll take another look for you.

Thanks!

@MsMarvel

Can I report the chromecast advert for randomly covering the whole screen and forcing me to wait for it to load, to then click on the x in the corner in order to get back to mumsnet? Happened a few times now and is very very annoying

Hi MsMarvel, thanks for flagging we've passed that info onto right people and hopefully they'll sort.

Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:32

@LegoCaltrops

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 OS Android Jelly Bean 4.1 Browser Chrome

I forgot to mention, also, my blue bar at the bottom keeps randomly disappearing part way through a thread. Ive definitely got it switched on, I rather like it actually when it works so I've not turned it off & forgotten! It usually reappears when I go into a new thread. Strange!

Hey there LegoCaltrops, that screenshot is really useful thanks loads for taking it. We'll take another look at Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 in general and bookmarks and bottom buttons in particular.

Many thanks!

MsMarvel can you recall where you saw this advert appear? It sounds like a popup and that shouldn't be happening at all. Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:42

@AllOutOfNaiceHam

I quite like the slight formatting changes. I also don't seem to have the annoying add (or white bar when adblock is active) at the top at the moment, which makes viewing the page on my LG g3 on 4.4.2 quite pleasant actually (as long as my brightness is turned right down). I do have some performance issues though. When clicking on an attached picture, the screen goes dark and freezes like in my screenshot. It eventually unfreeze after a couple of minutes and I can close the botched image view. When trying to reply to a post after attaching a picture the whole thread reloaded and I had to scroll all the way back down. Typing is still very blocky and stops a lot. Loading times are slow but you've mentioned that a few times.

My issue with the adverts is that my eyes automatically want to stay on the ad while I'm scrolling and I tend to read threads and scroll at the same time, so I end up staring at the ad with one eye while trying to read the thread with the other and that makes the headache triggered by the glaring white background worse. Please could we have an option to change all background colours? I really like how it reads on your blue posts.

Hi AllOutOfNaiceHam thank you that's good to know and we'll do some playing with LG G3. Your thoughts on ads and background colours have been noted and we'll definitely include in our design discussions this week.
Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:43

@LadyIsabellaWrotham

Ooh, so I can, though it's still pretty slow.

V glad it's working LadyIsabellaWrotham Grin we're continuing to look at improving speed.

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:52

@Munchmallow

I've now tried three different browsers and still can't get the chevron button to work.

Samsung galaxy ace 2

Hello, hopefully nickelbabe's post to try on firefox has helped a bit but we'll be looking more closely at Samsung Galaxy ace 2 too.
Thank you for letting us know Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:53

UPDATE

This week we'll be testing new advert placement, continuing to improve speed of loading, considering various design feedbacks including OP showing at top, show all messages, background colours and more, and continuing to test on other devices.

We'll probably start separate threads on bits of the above to gather your thoughts as this one is getting full and a bit unwieldy.

Thank you ALL for posting your feedback and experiences it is incredibly useful and we couldn't improve without you.

Many thanks
Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 15:52

@Germgirl

Re: annoying ads. Most of them don't bother me but this one is a right pain in the rear. Very flashy & intrusive. Apart from that, the site is looking good Smile

Thanks Germgirl, we've going to be trying something different with ads this week which hopefully will be less intrusive.

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 15:55

@Lweji

I have noticed a new problem (on top of others) on my iPod 4.2.1 Safari

Firstly, and as back story, the blue shortcut bar is still not moving with the screen, but stuck in place and it covers part of the page when I scroll down. (see first picture)

Before, when I opened the down arrow the menu would push down the thread, and then I could actually read it, but now it doesn't. It just also sits on top of the thread (second picture).
And... the shortcut bar also covers part of the menu.

(the rest seems to be working fine, though. :) )

Hi Lweji, we're going to take a look again at iPods to see if we can replicate your shortcut buttons problem.

Am glad the rest seems to be working and we are still working on optimising speed along the way which should improve still further. Thanks for the update!

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 15:57

@Romeyroo

I'm sorry I have not read the rest of the thread since I last posted on here on Friday. I was pleased to see that the font was now more legible on my Nokia Lumia Smile but I am afraid that I am still struggling with it. I had another migraine Saturday and then when I tried to post this morning (as I usually do with my morning coffee), I managed one short thread and post, then I was going to post on a thread I was following a while back, and I had to stop as I was feeling ill again.

I know you are trying a lot and putting a lot of time into making the mobile site work for me, but I am going to have to give up on it for now. I don't know what the problem is. It may just be me.

If it is any help, the chevron on my phone no longer works either, so I can't easily find the posts I was previously on any more, which doesn't help matters.

Hello there Romeyroo, sorry to hear you were feeling ill Sad we're continuing to discuss design options which might help alleviate things for you. Flowers

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 16:01

Hello MewlingQuim, the three little dots should expand to a menu for you when you tap them. We'll double check that on Samsung Galaxy phone again to make sure. Within that menu are options to report, bookmark and jump to top or bottom. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 16:02

@OTheHugeManatee

This may have already been covered and I cba to RTFT (sorry!) but my two main improvement requests would be:
  • Show the OP at the top of each page like on the usual site. It's annoying when you can't remember who the OP is or want to check something they said;
  • Option to View All Messages. I tend to MN on the train home, which has quite patchy 3G coverage. I love finding a nice juicy bunfight long thought-provoking thread to read through the patches of No Service on the View All setting and I can't do this any more.

Other than these things it's generally pretty good.

I'm viewing in the latest Safari on iPhone 4.

Hi there, happily both the putting the OP at the top of every page and View all messages are something we're looking into. Thank you for your thoughts!

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 21:56

@meglet

(this is from my laptop) I tried my Blackberry again today. It still doesn't work. The pages take ages to download and it doesn't recognise threads as a link.

Without wanting to sound too dramatic but it will I feel bloomin' lonely without MN on my phone. It used to keep me amused when the dc's were driving me up the wall.

Sorry you're been bereft and lonely, that's must feel rubbish Sad We will try to make things better for Blackberry users generally. Speed is top priority but we'll investigate thread links too.

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 21:59

@Munchmallow

Jessica, I'm using Firefox but the chevron doesn't work.

I have no box to name change? In fact my name doesn't show at all at the bottom.

Samsung galaxy ace 2

Firefox

Hello there, we spent a good deal of time looking sternly at Samsung (S4) until it behaved last week but it seems that Samsung Galaxy 2 is a different kettle of fish so we'll try to make time for extra testing on that too. and Cake

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 22:02

@GiveMeCheesecake

Haven't RTFT (and I hate when people say that and post but I really can't read 8 pages before posting) but I've just noticed something that would be helpful but it might have already been mentioned.

There's no guide under the message box on how to post a link. Just went to post a link in a thread and completely forgot how to, and there was no handy guide underneath! So I had to switch to desktop version to do it.

A guide like the desktop site and the old mobile site would be handy or a button that instantly converts links.

Hello,

Thanks for the info on weirdy ad, we'll take a look. We're going to look into whether we can convert links for you so you don't need to but you raise a good point about the guide - we'll have a think about that too. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 22:12

@springbabydays

Is there a way of getting to TIO without using the blue bar?

Mine no longer works, it just clicks on whatever's underneath it.

SE Xperia arc android.

Hello, noted about the clicking underneath but in the meantime, try tapping the chevron (arrow) menu at the top of the page. You should see TIO there.

Official Mumsnet mobile thread part 3

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 22:15

MsMarvel and PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears Thank you for the screenshot, very useful! Someone is trying to track that pesky ad down so the more information the better. If either of you could note what page you're on when it appears that would help enormously.
Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 11:58

@rurbane

Galaxy Ace, android.

It looks perfect now, all the buttons have the icons. But, like MewlingQuim, they don't always work if it's a long thread or after I've looked at 3-4 threads. Sometimes it's quicker to close down my internet completely and start all over than wait for the ... or 'Active' on the blue bar to respond.

Also, if you do change the colour scheme, it would be helpful if the colour changed a lot more when you've tapped on something rather than just becoming a slightly different shade. e.g. could it be yellow or red rather than greyish blue. That way I would know for definite that my tap had worked!

Thanks.

Hi there rurbane, really glad you've seen an improvement, We'll carry on testing Galaxy anyway because there do seem to be a few remaining niggles on that one Thanks

Noted about the tapping feedback, we'll have a think when we consider other design elements.
Thanks!

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 11:59

@Suzannewithaplan

I still cant use the mobile site on blackberry Q10 because the predictive text wont work :(

Hi there Suzannawithaplan I'm not sure that something that we can affect but we'll chat through with tech and see if anyone has any ideas thank you Flowers

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 12:03

@Sleepwhenidie

Ok I have been using the mobile site daily since it switched over and tried to like it but...
  • the screen feels too small with the ads at the top and the icons at the bottom
  • I hate not being able to have the active etc icons at the bottom unless I am logged in
  • it is irritating that the OP is no longer pasted at the top of each page, I have to go back to p1 to re-read it
  • it is more 'work' navigating around, for example I have to click '....' 'top' then ^ and 'watch' to watch a thread when before I could just click one tab instead of 4! Similarly I have to click on an actual thread and then the topic to get to a topic list of threads, rather than being able to click through, say 'Food' in the title of a thread in Active convos.

Hello Sleepwhenidie

We're trying out a new approach with ads this week so hopefully that will help. Please do pop over to this thread and let us know your thoughts.

We've had some ideas about the OP at the top of pages which we'll be trying in the near future.

We understand some actions are more effort, it's a tricky balance getting everything in while still maximising the space for posts. You should be able to click on the breadcrumbs and on the sub-topic title from within the topics page though.

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 12:05

@maxmissie

Chevron at top still appearing at top left and not clickable as per munchmallow's and nickelbabe's posts and my earlier posts. Not on a Samsung though, still on Firefox on HTC one Android. Is this a problem with Firefox as it wasn't an issue before I switched browser?

Still having to hide the bottom blue toolbar every day even though every day I customise it to be hidden.

Bookmarking still works when first going into a thread but am going to see what happens once I've posted this and see where in the thread I end up.

I'll take back my comment about the tiny side scroll button, it came up on another site as well so not just pertinent to mumsnet!

Also have to be really careful when typing posts as several times I've clicked on the ad behind the keyboard by mistake, not sure how but think it's because sometimes the screen jumps around.

Speed still awful in every way!

Hello again, thank you for the update we're glad scrolling isn't something we've broken! Blush We're continuing to try to optimise speed as much as possible.

We're going to carry on looking at HTC as well as Samsung to try to improve matters for you Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 12:06

@LadderToTheMoon

I was browsing Facebook on my mobile (Samsung Galaxy S3 mini) yesterday and noticed something that gave me a flash of inspiration...

The "Status", "Photo" and "Check In" blue bar at the bottom of the page is about the same size as the shortcut bar on Mumsnet, but it isn't there all the time. It disappears when scrolling down the page and reading the newsfeed, but comes back again when scrolling up.

On Mumsnet the shortcut bar is really annoying (to me anyway) when it is visible the whole time and it takes up a lot of space on the screen. But it is equally annoying having to scroll to the top of the screen, click the little person icon, then click "show shortcut buttons" and then to Active, Watching or wherever. Seems like a lose-lose situation.

I don't post much on Mumsnet, but the change to the mobile site has seriously affected the way I browse. It just seems so much of a palaver, especially as I tended to browse when cooking dinner. It feels as though too much of my attention is needed to look at Mumsnet now.

Is the Facebook style of shortcut bar something you could consider on Mumsnet?

That's an interesting idea LaddertotheMoon, we'll pass your thoughts on, thanks!

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 12:07

@JenniMoo

I've skimmed the threads and can't work out the answer, and have been trying to use desktop version since the launch: how do I 'bump and reset' my watched threads? I think it's just me not spotting it, but am on iPhone 5, iOS 7 and safari.

It's not jsut you JenniMoo we're working on introducing some of those options, we're just trying to take it carefully to ensure it doesn't interfere with other changes. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 12:10

Hello all,

We're testing a new approach to adverts, please pop over to this thread to give your thoughts.

(This is copied from RebeccaMumsnet's opening post on that thread)

There’s been a bit of negative feedback about the fixed ad at the top of the site so we’d like to test a new approach this week - no fixed at at the top but a returning in-text ad (every 6 posts) as you scroll down the page (something we’ve seen on other sites like the Guardian)

Hopefully this will also be a preferable solution for those who’ve felt the pages are too uniform or too white. As ever, please let us know what you think.
