Morning all,

And welcome to the new thread!
Grin

As SarahMumsnet said at the end of the last thread, we have Tech on call for fixes this weekend, and various MNHQers will be here to talk and help wherever we can.

We'll be adding to the rolling list of bugs, glitches and dislikes (see below), so please keep the feedback coming. Do remember to list which device you're using, which operating system, and which browser, so we can identify the specific issues.

Right then, who's first?

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 12:13

@MirandaWest

I am being bad and have not read all the thread. But these are my issues.

You can't click on someone's name to see if they have a profile.

Advanced search doesn't include yesterday and today and it doesn't link to a calendar when you click on the date box like it used to.

I'm using safari on an iPhone 5c running ios 7 of some type.

Hello MirandaWest, we'll have a think about those requests when we have a catch up next week. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 13:13

@Iggi999

Sinister, same phone, and i feel the same. I'm switching in and out of the mobile site to see if it gets better - glare has gone which is good, but I'm struggling to see any advantages to it (oh the smileys are easier, that's it). It feels like an app. I don't use the actual app as I don't like it. Now mobile feels like an app Sad The ads are horribly intrusive, I don't use any other websites that make me feel as advertised to. Despite my 20-a-day mumsnet habit, I will be cutting back.
Hello, good to hear the glare is better for you. We'll be testing something new with the ads next week so do let us know what you think when that change happens.

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 13:21

@TeenyfTroon

I have now resorted to making notes. What have you done to me, MN? Just found a new problem - I was trying to edit this post to give PinkandBlueBedtimeBears her full title and was using the magnifying glass to put the cursor in the right place and my finger was dragging the text all over the place instead of moving the magnifying glass. (iPhone 3GS, safari, iOS 6) LegoCaltrops mentioned how good it is that when you're previewing a post, the rest of the thread is still visible above. That's such a help. Is it ok to then go back a page or pages? On old site (RIP) your fledgling post used to disappear. PinkandBlue says on I'm Watching we really need the delete button and the bump and reset. In fact, just ask PinkandBlue what I think - every time she posts I nod and think 'must remember that'!

Notes you say, how very diligent of you! Grin

The highlighting, dragging text thing you describe sounds like a iPhone function to me rather than anything we can control. I believe it's down to the way you tap...

Very pleased you also like the preview improvement and yy more hide, watch functions are coming to a thread near you early next week!

@Needasilverlining

JessicaMN, I suspected we'd misunderstood each other. I can't think of a site where this happens that is available publicly because TBH, on most sites the mobile one's fine so I don't want the desktop.

But the intranet site I just finished working on had a dynamic design so that if you were viewing on mobile, the text would automatically squeeze in to fit the screen you were looking at (font size the same, just lines shorter IYSWIM). There weren't two separate sites as such, just different bits pulling through depending on device. A much easier approach IMO.

Could the customise buttons be like Kindle and include text resizing/spacing options? Grasping at straws here but I cannot use the mobile site as it is, the desktop's too big for my phone really and the change means my usual MN time (train to work) is basically impossible.

I do appreciate all the work you're doing and I sympathise with how crushing it must be to have all these problems, but ATM after weeks of huge effort you still don't have a site which works as well as the old one!

Ahhh now I understand! What you're referring to is a responsive design. It'd something we're interested in and have been trying out. If you visit our Exciting New Event Bumpfest you can see an example of how responsive design can work.

Thank you for your thoughts and for your sympathies. We're very keen on testing and trying things out and care very much about including our users in that process so don't worry we're happy to keep going with your help to ultimately end up with a slicker, better experience. Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 14:25

Hello, we haven't updated the Mumsnet App recently but we're keenly aware it's not great for everyone so do intend to do what we can about that.

The Mumsnet mobile site has been changed recently, if that's what your post is about would you mind letting us know what type of phone you have so we can investigate?
Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 14:28

Hello Merel, we can't replicate that issue at the moment but we'll keep trying! Can you check next time to see if the page is fully loaded before you tap?
Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 14:51

Hi elQuinto, we're continuing to work on speed but even as it stands it shouldn't be taking that long for you. We'll look more carefully at LG5.

We appreciate your feedback on advert placement and have been listening to many people's feelings about having it fixed in position. We'll be testing out a new approach next week, it'd be good to hear your thoughts on that when we make the change.
Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 16:08

Hello, can you check what URL you're on? Look at the address bar does it start m.mumsnet.com or www.mumsnet.com?

(It should be www.mumsnet.com)

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 16:19

Excellent! We'll try and work on it our end too to see if there's something we can do.
Thank you all for helping us identify the problem. Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 17:00

@MewlingQuim

Samsung galaxy and android (I think) [luddite emoticon]

I don't seem to have a report button. Really wanted to report a highly offensive thread. Glad someone else did it.

I also have to tap on a thread about 20 times before it (or some random other thread) loads.

I have about 2 cm of screen visible between the advert at the top and the buttons at the bottom.

Sometimes I cannot post at all no matter how many times I tap the message box.

I have to preview twice before it comes up. Same with post.

Overall its just bloody awful. Where exactly is the improvement?

If I was on an ancient phone I could understand it but I'm not. I'm tied to this contract for another 18 months so I'm stuck with it. I may have to give up on MN completely if this is how it's going to be. Gutted Sad

Hello, I've just tried it on a Samsung Galaxy Android browser and can't currently replicate the issues you describe aabout posting but we'll keep trying so we can work out what's going on for you.

To report a post please press the ellipsis which you'll find on every post and contains lots of options. (Screenshot attached).

If you like you can switch off the bottom buttons by clicking the little person at the top of the screen.

We've been testing this position of the ad and take on board that you aren't keen - we'll be testing a different approach next week it'd be great to hear your thoguhts on that too.

Official Mumsnet mobile thread part 3

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 17:04

we'll also be introducing ways of reporting threads without needing to click into them soon. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 30/08/2014 18:50

Hello, I promise to return and answer other posters later but just quickly... you can watch a thread by choosing the chevron menu at the top of the page (the downwards arrow).

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 10:22

@LegoCaltrops

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 OS Android Jelly Bean 4.1 Browser Chrome

I've checked on the desktop site, it says bookmarks are switched on, but that it only applies to 'Mumsnet New' style. Sorry if I am being a total dunce here, but could you just confirm I am in fact supposed to do this in 'Customise'? Or is there anothere thing I'm supposed to change as well? natural luddite

Hello LegoCaltrops, No that's all you need to do. To save a bookmark on a thread tap the ellipsis menu found on every post and bookmark is one of the top options.

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 10:24

This is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 example

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 10:35

IrenetheQuaint We don't have that particular phone to hand to test on directly but we can look generally at Android 2.2. Tapping a thread or button should only need one tap before something happens - can you make confirm the page is fully loaded before you tap?

In the meantime, you can watch a thread by tapping the chevron menu at the top of the page.

Noted about Show all messages!

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 10:36

@DoubtfireDear

Still taking several clicks before I can open a thread anywhere, most of the time I still have to hold down and wait till the "open" menu pops up. Still takes at least 5-10 attempts to register I've pressed anything.

Samsung Galaxy S3, it happens on chrome and on default browser.

Hi Doubtfiredear as above can you confirm the page is definitely fully loaded before you tap? Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 10:38

@livelablove

Looking at the screen shots I think my phone is totally different. The taskbar and advert just stay at the top of the screen great with the ad as i dont want it and dont move. A lot of the pictures are not showing. These are not too bad issues the double posting is the problem. Nokia lumia 900 windows

Hi livelablove, we tried quite a lot last week to replicate your double posting and couldn't. We'll keep thinking about it though sorry not to have a nice quick fix for you. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 10:46

Okay thank you DoubtfireDear will take a look at that soon. Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 14:44

Hello coffeeandcakes, very pleased to hear there's been improvements for you on nexus. Smile We still working on getting the best balance between space and font size etc so thank you for letting us know your thoughts. Also thanks for flagging the odd picture enlargements, we'll take a look into that.

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 14:59

Sorry Teenyoftroon please accept lots of Cake as a sign of my contrition. I shall personally play about with magnifying glasses so I can see what's what.

We'll also put together a FAQ/User guide and where possible include screenshots to help asap.

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 15:01

We'll be working on speed next week and doing everything we can to speed up the time it takes for pages to load.

We realise that it's a bit painful on longer threads especially on chrome.

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 15:04

Hi maxmissie, thank you for that -nicely comprehensive! We'll test again on HTC Firefox alongside Samsung galaxy s2.
Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 31/08/2014 15:07

Hello iggi999 putting the OP at the top of every page is something we're going to chat about next week. We'll keep you posted and thank you for letting us know your thoughts!

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:23

@todayisnottheday

Can I just say, having taken a bit of time to try it and being one of the ones on a well supported platform, i love the new site. I find it quick and easy to navigate and fast apart from the delay between clicking and loading. Luckily for me i don't suffer from the brightness/flashing so I'm not sure if that's been addressed?

Wonderful! Very pleased to hear that and thank you for letting us know. The brightness has been addressed for most but we're still tweaking and considering options to improve still further.

JessicaMumsnet · 01/09/2014 09:25

@springbabydays

The line spacing in your quotes seems more appropriate for all the text, does anyone else agree? Also please please introduce an off white background? It's so much easier reading your posts against the blue HQ, than any others.

Thanks springbabydays more closely spaced text and an option for a an off-white background has been mentioned and is something we'll be thinking about this week. Thanks
