KatieMumsnet · 05/08/2014 11:30

So tonight sees the first TV debate of the Scottish Referendum with First Minister and key advocate of the pro- yes campaign, Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling, leader of the pro-UK Better Together campaign coming together for a head to head debate for the first time.

You can watch live from 8pm on STV and if you're south of the border can tune in via the STV player.

Fancy watching along with us? What are you hoping to see from tonight's debate? What are your thoughts on the campaigns so far?

If you've decided which way to vote, why? And if not, what will help you decide?

Do feel free to share these, and any more thoughts you have

In above post, *they referring to the people I mentioned, not the EU. :)

From personal conversations I tend to think many people working in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) related professions lean to a No vote.

In relation to the Gaelic conversation, to be honest I think that the many millions of pounds of our money ploughed into Gaelic overall, including transport and public building signage, separate schools and producing additional learning and teaching materials for school qualifications in Gaelic could have been put to much better use in education.

I think people in high-earning jobs will perhaps lean to a No vote, I genuinely don't know as I only personally know 4 No voters. Strangely, they fit in none of those job categories. Hmm But there will be exceptions to every rule, of course.

I have no idea what iScotland would mean for my job, it may or may not affect it. Probably not, but if it does, poop happens. Grin

Only 4? Don't worry, I know loads Grin. And a few yes. One of whom is very Braveheart about it, so I maybe see more than most of that side of Facebook.

Lol it's okay, I'm not worried. :) Hm like Braveheart the movie minus the historical inaccuracies, but yes the Braveheart thing is not the reason to vote Yes! Every vote for each side counts though, no matter what the reasoning.

I feel left out of the canvassing though, no-one has canvassed us at all, haha. :(

Me either. But the two large yes flags probably put both sides off Grin

Will be voting yes.

It may be the same with us ItsAllGoingToBeFine! Although I did walk past someone delivering leaflets to the houses in our street for the Yes campaign and told him it was nice to see him around. :) We've had leaflets from both sides, but no callers, either at the door or by phone. No-one carrying out polls, either.

My polling card has arrived! Exciting times.

Ooh maybe ours will be there when I get home! What is it like Santana? Silly question maybe but I'm curious! Just like the regular polling cards for general elections and such, but with Yes and No instead of the parties?

Did you say you were rural, itsAllGoingToBeFine? Do you mean flags on flagpoles or in windows? I've seen a couple of flats that have their windows completely covered by flags - I do wonder if they're sitting with the lights on all day. Have seen more No posters going up recently. I do wish both sides would stop putting stickers on lamp posts and bus stops - some are now just a mess of ripped off bits of stickers. And Edinburgh Council have thousands of pounds racking up daily in interest payments for the trams so not sure how much money there will be for clearing up Wink

No, just name, address and polling station on one side, and 'How to Vote' on the other.

My polling card has taken pride of place beneath a fridge magnet.

Flags in windows. Agree about stickers though they look shitty really quickly and it's basically just littering.

There is a big flag somewhere beside the motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, but I've only seen one on a flagpole. The others have all been secured to fences or on wooden stands that someone has erected.

I saw someone plastering big "Keep Calm And Vote No" stickers in the middle and at the top of a charity shop window on my way home one evening. Regardless of which side is doing it, Yes or No, I thought that was a sh*tty thing to do, especially to a charity. Would have felt the same if it had been a Yes sticker.

DH and I have two sets of cards as we have two houses in Scotland in different regions and pay two lots of council tax. We will only use one vote though.

If I see no posters and stickers littering the place, I remove them and dispose of them responsibly, as you do.

OOAOML · 15/08/2014 16:30

someone put a yes sticker next to the door to our tenement. I took it down. as you do.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/08/2014 16:41

I agree. The problem us stickers aren't always that easy to remove and to my eye look worse partially scraped off.

TBF to the No side though I have never seen a No sticker, and I think I have only ever seen three No windows.

Report
WhatTheFork · 15/08/2014 16:48

Yes, to be fair I don't come across many no stickers.

I think I've just fallen out with my best friend over this bloody referendum. She and her boyfriend were giving it "no voters just haven't done their research" and I bit Sad. I don't think even the Yes voters on here would accuse me of not having done research.

I have wondered about putting something on FB to the extent of 'see you on the other side, but for the moment let's just unfollow each other' with certain people (mainly the Braveheart fan)

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/08/2014 21:52

I don't actually post "no" stuff - I just responded to a comment. But I am wondering if I should do the same. I deleted him ages ago, really didn't want to with her though. We've been friends for 16 years.

Bloody referendum!

Report
OOAOML · 15/08/2014 21:57

I tend not to share stuff. I often 'like' stuff and I comment on a few referendum posts but not sure what shows up on news feeds. I did respond directly to her post announcing her discovery of Isle of Man tenders to point out that I didn't think we were voting on becoming a Crown Dependency. Radio silence.

Hopefully we can all move past this. Feelings are bound to get higher over the next month, and as assertions get wilder it is hard to sit on your hands.
