Due to a security breach we are resetting all passwords across Mumsnet

RebeccaMumsnet · 12/04/2014 17:32

Following the recent security breach related to Heartbleed we are reseting the passwords of all users.

On Saturday 12 April, we will remove all passwords from our system and to use the site, you'll need to reset your password by clicking on the password reset link.

Type in your email address and click the 'Request reset' button and you will receive a mail to your Mumsnet registered email account. (You will need to click on the link in the mail within 30 minutes of receiving it, without changing the device you're using i.e swapping from phone to laptop, or you'll need to request a further reset).

If you do not receive a mail, please check you spam folder. The password reset mail will come to the email you used when you first registered with Mumsnet.

If you don't receive or can't access your reset mail, please [email protected] for help.

We are very sorry for all the fuss. We want to assure you that we followed all the published steps to protect members' security as soon as we became aware of the heartbleed security risk, but it seems that the breach occurred prior to that risk becoming known.

Most importantly, if you use the same password here as elsewhere, we strongly recommend you change your password on the other sites too.

Thanks,

Justine & the MNHQ team

@MinecraftAteMyWorld

I changed my password earlier on my phone but have not been asked to on my laptop. Should I change it?

No you should be OK by the sounds of it

@InspirationFailed

Sorry to be a pain - I can't access PMs

I get this message Confused

Oh dear! Are you on the mobile site? Anyone else having trouble reading their PMs on there?

makesomenoise · 13/04/2014 17:46

Been waiting for an email to reset for 24 hours so have re-joined instead.... I was logged out of app without doing anything as well. Would still like old account back if possible!!!

InspirationFailed · 13/04/2014 18:14

I have tried on both the mobile site and the desktop site and get the same message for both - I thought it might be because I had initially joined via google so had never confirmed my email, so I tried to rejoin but it won't accept my email address as it's in use.

poorbuthappy · 13/04/2014 18:34

Finally got the old laptop up and running and sorted it via the first link in this thread.

3littlefrogs · 13/04/2014 18:55

Hi MN towers.
Don't know how else to contact anyone.
You have emailed me today to tell me to change my password.
I have tried to do this using my current password that I changed via the link you sent me yesterday.
Password not recognised, so can't change it, don't want to log out as I won't be able to get back in again.
The email you sent me today is a "do not reply" one, so what do I do now???
I will report my post in the hope that you can help.
TIA

MoJangled · 13/04/2014 19:02

Sorry to everyone who's having trouble. In an unheard-of bout of grip-having I've changed mine with no trouble. But do I have to change every other online account? Faint at the thought...

3littlefrogs · 13/04/2014 19:08

I can't even access a reset password button. Sad

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 19:21

Go back to the OP of this thread 3littlefrogs, and follow the instructions from there.

You can't change your password via 'my account'.

Alternatively just log out, then click on the 'password reset' button.

3littlefrogs · 13/04/2014 19:45

Thank you. Smile Smile

vintagenurse · 13/04/2014 19:51

what a frigging nightmare!!! Changed via link but then wouldn't let me log in with a new password - kept going round in circles - your email/username is not valid. Logged in via facebook but it has lost my username (??) so I have had to pick a new name. So I am on here now but cannot access via phone as it keeps coming up username and password invalid. Wasted an hour of my life so far on this!!!

AdoraBell · 13/04/2014 19:51

I changed my password yesterday, then today I've had 5 emails saying I asked for a password reset.

I need to change it again, don't I?

HenI5 · 13/04/2014 19:53

I've had to reregister as two attempts to reset my password via the email didn't work and I didn't want to wait for help.

Shakey1500 · 13/04/2014 20:09

I'm stuck Sad Followed the link from the email (I was still logged in) and trying to reset my password but it says my current one isn't the same as the one on the account, yet I haven't changed it! Confused

Also stuck on the app with it saying logon details are incorrect.

What do I need to do?? (25 mins and counting...)

NearTheWindymill · 13/04/2014 20:14

I keep getting e-mails to tell me there's been a new post on the "rat thread". Hmm. Is this normal or have I been hacked in some way?

thecatfromjapan · 13/04/2014 21:23

Everything has gone just fine with my laptop access. I can't make any connection by way of the mobile 'phone, however. I just get "Connection failed" . . . Do I need to do anything, or just wait?

AGnu · 13/04/2014 21:33

Phew. Done.

I don't like change.

Shakey1500 · 13/04/2014 21:57

Done it on laptop, not sure about phone yet.

Topseyt · 13/04/2014 22:08

I have done it. I also had messages from other sites I am involved with to do the same thing, including Tumblr.

My email account was hacked a couple of weeks ago for the first time ever, and I now wonder if that had something to do with heartbleed.

I have great sympathy with those who have mentioned that they have difficulty remembering new passwords. That is also one of my afflictions, and it isn't getting easier the older I get.

cozietoesie · 13/04/2014 22:23

People's other online accounts, especially those where they have significant exposure, are of more concern than MN I think. It's a shame for MN that they're having to front on so much of this problem because of the boards and the number of people actively involved.

(Email accounts have been getting hacked for years and years. The likelihood is that you fell for a phishing email. People always deny it emphatically but they still do make mistakes.)

Topseyt · 13/04/2014 22:39

It is certainly possible, cozietoesie. None of us are immune from it. I guess I was just lucky that I had had my email account for at least 10 years and until then nothing had ever gone wrong. False sense of security. I apparently send LinkedIn requests to all and sundry, even to dozens of people I have never heard of.

My eldest daughter (uni student) has recently had her Twitter account hacked. I also have a number of friends who seem to have had various things hacked. It does seem to have got much more just recently, though could be coincidence, of course.

Spinaroo · 13/04/2014 22:42

I seem to be logged in here but can't change passwords- like 3littlefrogs- argh!
