Due to a security breach we are resetting all passwords across Mumsnet

RebeccaMumsnet · 12/04/2014 17:32

Following the recent security breach related to Heartbleed we are reseting the passwords of all users.

On Saturday 12 April, we will remove all passwords from our system and to use the site, you'll need to reset your password by clicking on the password reset link.

Type in your email address and click the 'Request reset' button and you will receive a mail to your Mumsnet registered email account. (You will need to click on the link in the mail within 30 minutes of receiving it, without changing the device you're using i.e swapping from phone to laptop, or you'll need to request a further reset).

If you do not receive a mail, please check you spam folder. The password reset mail will come to the email you used when you first registered with Mumsnet.

If you don't receive or can't access your reset mail, please [email protected] for help.

We are very sorry for all the fuss. We want to assure you that we followed all the published steps to protect members' security as soon as we became aware of the heartbleed security risk, but it seems that the breach occurred prior to that risk becoming known.

Most importantly, if you use the same password here as elsewhere, we strongly recommend you change your password on the other sites too.

Thanks,

Justine & the MNHQ team

I have felt the need to deregister!

cozietoesie · 13/04/2014 22:53

No - none of us are immune from it and it's mostly the human/social side that's vulnerable. The time I was most nearly caught, I'd opened a cartoon sent to me by a good friend but luckily, and entirely fortuitously, was just about to do a deep scan and caught the Trojan in full flight. (He'd been compromised earlier that day.) It was a good lesson with, luckily, minimal damage.

5madthings · 13/04/2014 23:08

I just followed the link and have reset my password, also changed my passwords for gmail, fb, twitter, amazon etc just to be safe.

rednellie · 13/04/2014 23:12

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but if you want to come up with truly unique gobbledygook passwords and not have the bother of remembering them all check out lastpass.com

It is truly brilliant. (Sorry can't do hyper link...which I know doesn't do much for my techie credentials Grin)

Topseyt · 13/04/2014 23:58

I may need to take a look at lastpass, and others.

ICanSeeTheSun · 14/04/2014 00:39

Still can't reset mine, I have been posting all day via my phone but can't on my pc or pad.

hashtagwhatever · 14/04/2014 00:50

I am having trouble resetting mine. It says my original password is wrong but it 100% is the correct one?

Jollyphonics · 14/04/2014 06:53

MN would it be best for us all just to do nothing for a couple of days until you get this all sorted out? I've clicked on the link numerous times now but have yet to receive an e-mail, but luckily I'm still logged in on my iPad.
I'm still baffled at how some people have managed to do it with no problem, some have got nowhere, and some have had bizarre things like random name changes!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/04/2014 08:17

hashtag your original password no longer exists. You need to reset it using the link in the OP of this thread.

AnyFucker · 14/04/2014 09:37

I changed my password on Saturday as directed, then today that one stopped working and have had to go through the link to change it again

Anyone else ?

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 09:46

I did the same as you but I haven't got the nerve to try to log out and see if the new one still works.

OK. Here goes.

AnyFucker · 14/04/2014 09:48

...it was nice knowing you... Smile

VivaLeBeaver · 14/04/2014 09:52

I've done it and it works!

Same username and everything.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 09:54

Yep - logged out and the new password failed. (It had been acknowledged and everything.) I've had to request a reset etc. Successful, clearly, but we'll see how long it holds for.

AnyFucker · 14/04/2014 09:55

Mine lasted 2 days. Smile

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 09:58

About the same. Mind you, I changed my password as soon as this thread was posted and a day before I actually received the MN email about a reset.

Maybe the system will only allow you to do it in some set order.

mimishimmi · 14/04/2014 10:03

I had to register with a new username. My email address was recognized (at least I didn't get any message saying there was no user with that email registration). I entered twice for a password reset but never received the expected email either time.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 10:08

Maybe it's something to do with the machine you first entered the change on - and I clean can't remember.

LIZS · 14/04/2014 10:14

I left myself logged in and went away over the weekend , still logged in today . If I get logged out will I need to reset pw at that point ?

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 10:17

Try it and see. You might as well find out. (I just did and it failed but the password reset seems to work fine at the moment.)

Leeds2 · 14/04/2014 10:21

Password reset has just worked fine for me. Sixth attempt!

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 10:51

Actually, I could be maligning MN on this one. I've just found a very obscure note which suggests that I actually changed my password twice on Saturday. (Obviously a high paranoia evening.) So Homer might have nodded.

In a spirit of academic enquiry, I'll now change it again and check out all three machines to see that they've done what they were supposed to.

(After a cup of tea that is.)

5madthings · 14/04/2014 10:56

Same as anyfucker I did the password reset and it worked fine and then today when I tried to get on it had logged me out and didn't recognise my password even though it was the right one so I did the reset password thing again. Let's see how long it lets me stay logged in for now!

cozietoesie · 14/04/2014 11:02

OK - having had a cup of tea, I did a (hopefully) final change to the password on the old desktop downstairs, came upstairs to the laptops which were up here charging and found both logged in to MN still. Logged out of each, input the final password and both worked.

I'll keep an eye on it though.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/04/2014 11:04

Like, cozie I changed mine as soon as the thread was posted and it was fine. I'd log out and check if it was working, but I'm not 100% sure I can remember exactly what I changed it to.
