Fame! Or should that be infamy!

Does anyone know if it's actually a legit mumsnetter running these? I got the advert on my site to them, tried to email the sender back to confirm it was legitimate and that the money would actually go to any fund or the NSPCC only to have the email bounce.

I'd love to be proved a crabby old cynic, but just advising caution until otherwise proved wrong...

Eowyn · 10/08/2006 17:57

Wow. That is Fame, is that copywrited/patented/whatever makes you rich?

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 17:59

GeorginaA · 10/08/2006 20:34

Ah okay.

Have they posted before this?

GeorginaA · 10/08/2006 20:37

Okay, am happier that they're more likely to be legit now. Have pointed out to him on that thread that he might want to have a non-rubber email address when pimping for business

Georgina, here's the answers.

Cafepress allow you to upload artwork, which they print onto all kinds of items. Each item has a base price, you set the selling price and get any difference, less a small fee. I uploaded the cartoon and set up a store with a range of items marked up by $5. (It just seemed stupid not to make any money out of the cartoon, but I'll be surprised to sell 100 items - that would make £250.)

I did a technorati search for blogs that were running with the story and posted on (I think) 10 in total. Those who wanted a mail address got a duff one because I want to keep my indentity secret. The only two places who have a valid e-mail address for me are MN and Cafepress.

I'd be a very small-time con artist to do it this way. If you'd like a shirt/bag/mug buy one. I'm giving my $5 proceeds away (Cafe press WILL make money on the base price and handling fee) - but that shouldn't matter. Don't buy one support a good cause. If you want to support a cause give the money to it directly.

Fair enough, but you have to realise that by keeping your identity secret you will also incur a fair bit of suspicion in the process Thanks for clarifying though.
