'Convert links automatically' box - why not set default as ticked?

I appreciate that I am not the world's most tech-savvy person so apologies if I've missed something....

Why would anyone not want to make their links clickable? So couldn't we make that the default rather than having to remember to click the box?

You're not wrong with this one, it's a really good idea.

We were talking about doing it a while back, so will give a few prods in the right direction and see if we can make clicky links default (technical term).
