Site outage

Apologies for the site outage. There was a major power surge problem at the data centre (that's the secure air-conditioned facilities with lots of cabinets and servers and cables and wotsits). Lots of websites and services were affected, not just Mumsnet. We are trying our best to restore normal service.

No, all those gin bottles out the back keep MNHQ Towers nicely shored up. Enough to withstand two hurricanes one tornado, several farmhouses and one small teapot dog from Kansas.

Rumour has it they can't even open the ground floor windows anymore.

Oh and I read OP as "outrage"! I imagined the reaction of MNers up and down the country to being cut off!

Yep, it was all a conspiracy to force a population surge in approx. 9 months
If MNHQ had sent a hunky man round to make up for it I may have considered helping the cause

I,m not impressed MNHQ. I had to have actual relations with DH...I feel badly let down..

ZeroSomeGameThingy could you please explain where this overhanging stuff is meant to be. I honestly can't recall any overhangs anywhere (might be result of gin). Is it on desktop or mobile?

Desktop. I'm sure overhang isn't the technical term!

And I wouldn't trust my visual memory alone - my hand keeps pushing the cursor to where the "thing" ought to be.

To explain: as I am typing this: I used to be able to see a horizontal label at the top of the screen "Active, On, Watching etc". So I could have abandoned this thread and clicked immediately back to a different option - even from the bottom of a 900 post thread. Now there is nothing at the top but earlier posts in the thread. To get out of this thread I will have to either scroll to the top (!) for options or press the back button (unsatisfactory.)

There's no other problem with my laptop, so I'm puzzled as to why no-one else has noticed a change.

Are you talking about the Viewport Bar ? Check that you've not got it ticked to hide it (go to 'Customise') in case the various kerfuffles have reverted it somehow. I'll grant you that it's a bit sluggish this morning.

PS - it's about halfway down the 'Other Options' in Customise.

So.... I have saved "Hide the viewpoint bar? NO"

Doesn't seem to be making any difference.

Zero which browser are you using?

It should make a difference - just keep your eyes peeled. (It won't work until you've scrolled past the OP though. Why I don't know.)

I can only see the thread above me.

I'm seeing the viewpoint bar above me as I type. (It's just beneath the No 3 toolbar - ie at the top of the MN page I'm on.) I'm using Firefox but I just checked and it shows on IE just fine.

Did you by any chance change your browser last night when the site was out?

PS - might be worth checking if Chrome is not your normal one. Google sneak Chrome into your computer in all sorts of interesting ways - mainly by inserting a tick box into other downloads which many people don't notice. (And a fair number of applications don't support Chrome.)

I also read the thread title as "Outrage" because that's exactly how I felt last night! I was and every time I checked to see if MN was up again.

Totally ruined my night! I was bereft!

Is anyone else getting writing over the top of the list of topics on the Left side of the screen? Basically I can see the list of topics, but over the top of it, on each line, is written ( ) DSC
It's not affecting reading the actual threads, but it's a bit annoying.

Yay! It's fixed. I switched the laptop off and on and now I have the banner at the top again. Relief.
