Hi! Ever considered improving accessibility?

Hello lovely Mumsnet, would you like some cake?

Cake Cake Cake

Good. Got you listening now.

I just wondered if you had ever considered adding some extra features to make the site more accessible for those on the autistic spectrum and I which might also help those with sight issues, I'm thinking options that you can turn on so they don't bother the neurotypical.

For example, the option to change the colour background and text colour/size

an example of colour option is here Irlen website

And, I've just gotten in trouble on another thread, again, for mixing up the OP's posts with another. Would it be possible to add in an option to highlight the OP's posts (so all the replies as well as the main one) in a different colour? I remember someone asking for this before - was it just that people didn't like it?

The OP thing is possible - you need to have a play around in settings.

GotMyGoat · 10/12/2013 16:24

Ooooh! I'm all ears! Ok - I'm off to settings to have a nose.

Sorry I couldn't give you specific instructions - it's not cos I'm an unhelpful cow, it's because I'm on my phone and can't look it up (no idea whether it's possible from phone).

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 10/12/2013 16:28

Yeah there is actually a lot of accessibility stuff under customize.

EmpressOfThe7WillowsandTaras · 10/12/2013 16:28

You want Mumsnet New for the different coloured posts option.

GotMyGoat · 10/12/2013 16:28

I NEVER KNEW!!!!!!

That's fine - for anyone else who wanted to know, I clicked customise (up there, near threads i'm on and stuff) and then there were lots of lovely options about how mumsnet could look for me - which I never knew about!

Now OP is in a lovely dark Lavender and I am a forest green, thank you (not so)Evil.

Now, lovely forest green would look much better than this garish white now wouldn't it MN?

Ok, I'm on Mumsnet New there are loads and loads of options, including the option to hide social media incase I'm tempted to give away my secret identity.

Still, no background option.

Would also help dyslexics too. It's frustrating lots say the mobile site is better than the app.... Can the app be made just as good?

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 10/12/2013 16:33

No you're right, no background option. That's a good suggestion, though.

GotMyGoat · 10/12/2013 16:38

I'm mostly thinking about Irlen, dyslexics and dyspraxics - but I'm sure there's loads of cross over across the spectrum. Also migraine sufferers would find it much easier to use MN from their confinement if there was less black and white.

And some people would just find it pretty.

Hi - we do have a medium-term plan for radically improving all the apps, honest. It's just going to take a little while, which is why we're recommending that anyone who finds the apps frustrating can use the mobile site instead for now.
