Dear Mumsnet, can we have a 'sport' section please at top level, replacing the 'sporting events' one (i.e. sit on your backside watching, and most of the categories are long dead anyway'

you put disordered eating dieting very high up, how about giving exercise an equal priority please?

There is a Sports section for general sports talk (both for watching sports and for participating in them) Here

In the structure it lives under 'Fun and Games' - I don't think it's really big enough to warrant it's own whole top-level subject.

sport and exercise don't warrant their own top level subject?

I don't know anyone who watches sport. Know plenty who do it, plus go to the gym, swimming etc.

am I that unusual?

I wouldn't say you were unusual. I could probably list about an equal number of people I know who enjoy playing sport as those who enjoy watching it. I was just saying it didn't seem to warrant a top-level topic because the current Sports topic doesn't appear to be a hub of activity. This, admittedly, might be because people can't find it - or might be because the majority of MNers don't talk about their sporting activities on here, or do, but stick to Chat... What do you think? Have you posted in Sports/did you know it was there?

It might be that a lot of the MN sports-doers are posting in different areas of the forums; places like the Couch to 5K will attract runners, and gym-goers. There are a scant few posts in the sports section asking/talking about participating in various sports, but in general it looks like a fairly slow-moving section of MN. I've only ever been in there to talk about the Formula 1, and that was because I saw the thread on Active, not because I went looking for it.

I'm not sure what the MN criteria for rearranging forums is. It might not be based on how much it's used, in which case my comments above are heading off down the wrong path.

What was your idea/proposal for how it should be? An overall topic of Sports and Exercise with sub-topics of 'football', 'tennis', 'gym' etc or something a bit looser? I think it would have to appeal to both sports participants and sports watchers/followers as, in my experience, the two groups do have some overlap.

specialsubject · 27/11/2013 13:05

no, I didn't know the sports topic was there!

the idea of the overall 'sports and exercise' top level topic sounds great. Sub topics to include gyms, swimming, running, tennis, sailing, cycling etc etc and one for spectator sport.

the emphasis on diet and food issues is bad and needs to be countered with a healthy lifestyle.

Hi specialsubject - thanks for raising this. We'll go back to the drawing board and have a think.

What do other people thinks about this?

I think before you add even more topics, you push the topic cull to the top of Tech's list.

After the hide poster button.

cheers MNHQ, will watch this space.
