Idea for new discussion board - Days Out Recommendations

Especially around holiday time I have noticed we often get threads about where to go with children, and ideas for days out. Also, past few weeks I have been and had some lovely days out with DD.

I wondered whether it'd be an idea to have a Day Out Recommendation type board. So if anyone has a good place to visit they could post it here. At the start of each thread it'd need the name of the place, the location and a suitable for 'age group' type comment. Then why you enjoyed it and other info about the place, maybe even web links.

Then other people can add their views on the place too - good or bad.

This can then be searched by other members when looking for somewhere to go.

What do you think?

Sounds a damn good idea to me. I keep meaning to go to our local tourist information centre to pick up leaflets but I never do...

excellent idea hula!

And a '30 minutes from...' topic that would coven the major motorways. How often have we all spent time in the car with children who need to have a good run around while we bomb up and down the motorways. There must be all sorts of great parks, museums etc close to main rounts that only local people know about......now this would make a great new mumsnet book idea, couple it with places to eat that don't throw a fit if you bring a child.

Mumsnet on traveling. Might get some cash for the wonderful people at Mumsnet with advertising etc as well.

Some more good points there too hmb. We often drive down to London with 22mo DD in the car and, especially if traffic is heavy, need to stop on the way but I so object to spending a fortune on a cuppa at service stations. It'd be great to know an alternative just a 5 or 10 minute ride off the motorway.

So maybe two new baords then:

Days Out Recommendations

And an extention to the traveling one - maybe Travelling by Road with children; where to stop?

Love the idea of some books

One little dodge that dh and I use when we travel up the A1 to Scotland is not to stop in a service station, but to drive to The Gateshead Ikea. It is bang on a motorway junction, and a full meal for the four of us costs less than coffee and cakes at a service station (I've made a direct comparison).
Plus the kids get to play in the kids department, and in the park outside and run off some steam. And I usualy get a little something for being a good Mummy and not having throttled the little dears for saying, 'Are we there yet, 5,000,000 times'!
Good place on the M42 (but more of a treat for the kids) is Cadbury world. It is 8 miles from the Motorway junction. Has a great outdoor park whih I think that you can used even if you don't go inside and pay.

hmb - we have done exactly the same thing but at J26 (I think) of the M1 - the Nottingham Ikea.

Thought this may help here

Hulababy · 18/02/2004 18:14

Thanks FF, that is quite useful actually.

BUT it didn't have the place I visited today on it Also, I think the idea of 'real' reviews would be good - maybe even get the children to write their own bit too.

Thinking about it - I think the idea of having the children do a review would be good too - especially if age specific. Mind, all DD would say is "That's good that is" or "Eciting!"

Hi Hulababy,
We think a "days out" section as recommended by members is a top idea. We'll start it up soonest and also look into ways of making it searchable by postcode (Tech will be pleased )
Best Justine

Thanks Justine

Hulababy, thanks so much for the J26 info. We are often travelling to Leeds (dh is a northern lad!) and usually stop at Leicester Forest services. The Ikea would be a much better stop off. Is it close to the actual M1 junction ?
Thanks so much XX
