Mumsnet Swears By

Am I the only one who is a bit Hmm when I click through to the threads "recommending" these products?

If it's a MN swears by product, I sort of expect it to be consistently highly rated and recommended by more than two a raft of MNers. Like, oh, I don't know, naice ham or Pombears.

Whereas what we're actually getting is recommendations for things that two people on a short thread have said is quite good or suggestions of a dress based on a thread asking "what do you think of this dress?" and a bunch of posters agreeing that said dress looks nice, none of whom have actually bought the dress or even tried it on.

I'd rather have fewer recommendations for things that people were actually recommending, than a weekly barrel scraping email of some things that are "quite good" or "look nice".

Ta ever so.

Seconded. It's less Mumsnet swears by, and more Mumsnet discussed this in passing and didn't slate it sometimes.

Having said that - do we still get Mumsnet swears by emails? I haven't had that or a Talk Round up for a very long time.

MrsHoratioNelson · 29/08/2013 13:01

Junk mail? I get swears by but I don't think I ever got the talk round up.

I still get both weekly. I never click on the links though.

Hello

Thanks for this - we're always up for feedback, even if it's bad

We do try to find threads where MNers are whole-heartedly recommending things. Apologies if we've got some of them wrong. We'll pass this on to the team that compiles the mails.

MrsHoratioNelson · 29/08/2013 21:21

Thanks Rowan. I'm trying to save you a job, really Wink

If you only send out a swears by email when something really, truly has been recommended, less work all round, innit?

I've wondered about this. Remember looking at some "swears by" recommendations and seeing people say "ooh yes i'll order one of those" whereas I'd expect "got one in each colour, been using/wearing them for years and I'll definitely get another when they wear out".

Someone once started a "mumsnet swears at" thread, iirc. It was great, much more animated than the swears by threads.

Now there's an email I'd like to receive each week. Would save me buying all sorts of useless tat!

Also stopped getting the emails...
