I do not like those massive share buttons.

They are very distracting from the last post on a thread. Are they necessary? I can't imagine why!

Just posted on the other thread - you can hide them by scrolling down here

EverythingIsTicketyBoo · 09/08/2013 15:43

Thank you Mrslettuce :)

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 09/08/2013 15:44

Yeah, thatwas me too. Blush I figured this was the right place to moan.

I have hidden them now. But to reinterate my rant on the other thread, MN, can you not make them opt in, rather than opt out? They make the site look like playschool! Massive bright blocks of colours.

it's made everything else weird too.

the usual bar has moved over to the right, so you can't see it.

MNHQ we didn't want the share buttons in the first place, why would we want them bigger than the universe??? HmmAngryConfused

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 09/08/2013 15:48

Arf @ bigger than the universe!

They actually made me jump. Your massive sharing thingies actually scared the shit out of me. Grin

Yes, sorry about the bar moving to the right - that wasn't meant to happen and is being fixed as we speak.

Grin Sorry.

You can get rid of them if you like by going to Customise and flipping the Show Social Media dropdown to No.

CoolStoryBro · 09/08/2013 15:53

Why would anyone want to Pin a MN thread? Am I using Pinterest all wrong? I just thought it was for storing ridiculously expensive stuff that I will never be able to afford Blush

EasterHoliday · 09/08/2013 15:55

what gets shared? are our random postings here likely to be posted on some stranger's twitter / fb feed if they fancy it?

HelenMumsnet · 09/08/2013 15:59

@EasterHoliday

Well possibly. But then MN is a public, Google-indexed forum, so a stranger always could post a thread onto her twitter /fb feed.

MrsLettuce · 09/08/2013 15:59

Everything we post on here is available to be read by anyone who should care to look anyway, Easter.

MrsLettuce · 09/08/2013 15:59

x posts. I'll get me coat Wink

EasterHoliday · 09/08/2013 16:02

yes, someone could be that odd I suppose, but encouraging it? it's like an internet intervention waiting to happen

We've had those buttons, albeit smaller and up top, for over a year now.

EasterHoliday · 09/08/2013 16:05

out of interest, do your site stats tell you how frequently they get used?

Tee2072 · 09/08/2013 16:06

I like them. Except if I'm going to share on Twitter, I don't use them as they don't shorten the URL, so I use TinyURL and copy/paste.

Perhaps in the next release, Helen?

Probably. (Not a stats head). I'll try to find out.

DanceParty · 09/08/2013 16:06

I've hidden mine. I can't get away from bloody Facebook no matter what I do so to come on here and find those enormous buttons in the thread........aaaaarrrrrggggghhh

Thanks Tee. We'll look into doing that.

MmeLindor · 09/08/2013 17:38

I don't mind them, but if I am going to share a thread, I generally do it through Bufferapp.

If someone wants to share a thread the fact that there is or isn't a button won't make a difference.

Good idea to make them hide-able - I would say that this is an improvement on the other ones cause at least you can hide them.

Making them opt-out means that no one can come back in 3 years and complain that they didn't know that threads would be shared elsewhere.

You could hide the older ones, MmeL.

But yy re not making a difference - and you could argue, it's a good visible reminder than it might happen, perhaps making you rethink what details you might post.

MmeLindor · 09/08/2013 17:44

I didn't know that you could hide them. Never wanted to, mind.

Tee2072 · 09/08/2013 17:48

I didn't know you could hide them either!

I'm not sure, I must say, that the bottom of the page is the best place for them. Maybe in the RH sidebar? Or at the top like they used to be?

Just from a design standpoint. Convention is, of course, top of the page, and not quite so large!

WorraLiberty · 09/08/2013 18:33

Thanks for the link MrsLettuce

I don't normally mind changes but the social media share buttons were far too huge.

I've even got used to the annoyance of accidentally hitting the new 'hover over' thing at the top of the page...and being faced with a dog with spaghetti on its head.

But this was a step too far Grin

LibraryBook · 09/08/2013 18:37

Shouldn't the buttons say Overshare on Facebook Overshare on Twiiter and Overshare on Google+1 ?

How do you hide them?
