...type the url in instead of copying it from the address bar?

If you just type the url in it seems to put www.mumsnet.com/ in front of it, and then the link won't open.

Yes, you have to put in the .

That is because in theory you can make non-http links (could be secure so ), or you could be putting in a link so people can send you mail, in which case you use mailto: followed by the email address. Having said that, we whould probably change it so that it puts in the if there is no "ptotocol" specified. I'll have a look at that later today.
