Has mumsnet mates gone?

Hello. Yes, we took the link away because it was broken - and therefore unhelpful.

You could make folks your Mumsnet Mates but the facility to restrict your profile photos so they're only visible to your Mumsnet Mates was disabled aeons ago (after a little bit of an outcry on the boards).

So, as making someone your Mumsnet Mate is now something that has no practical application at all any more, we took the link down.

Can I ask - I used Mumsnet mates to show members of my postnatal group photos. I used it quite a lot. Are the photos that I had on my profile which previously only my named Mumsnet mates could see now visible to all?

Unless I'm mistaken the facility to restrict pics on your profile to Mumsnet Mates hasn't worked for quite a while.

But you've got me worried now, so I will double-check for you.

I really don't want my pictures visible to all. I'd made them mn mates only. So now I think I'll have to delete them...

Well I know. That's why we took the link away: we didn't want folk thinking they were restricting viewing of them when they weren't.

Saying all that, we do need to be SURE we're right about Mumsnet Mates not working.

I can see your profile pics, MrsCosmopilite. Did you think they were only visible to your Mumsnet Mates?

There wasn't one, wigglesrock. We thought (obviously wrongly) that as it didn't work, no one would be using it.

I am also very upset (if it is the case) that on my profile pics it says to me that I have some only visible to mumsnet mates when anyone can see them! Another privacy issue that MN has fallen down on, I have already had a problem with private messaging reverting to a nn I had changed from Angry. How are you supposed to know a marker such as "visible to mumsnet mates only" isn't working if no one tells you Angry? Any why would you take it away anyway! It's very useful?

We're very sorry. We honestly didn't know the link was still there until recently.

The Mumsnet Mates thing was conceived - and I believe mothballed - a long time ago (before my time, certainly).

We only saw the link - and realised it was linking to a facility that doesn't exist - a little while ago.

No I don't think that's true, Sleepwhenidie.

We rectified a problem that was making it look as though photos were only displaying to Mumsnet Mates when they're weren't.

Basically, from what I understand, the function of making them visible only to mates hasn't worked for ages. We are checking on that, though.

OK. We definitely DID have crossed wires here at MNHQ.

Turns out that Mumsnet Mates is working and setting your pics to Private or Visible to Mumsnet Mates is working and secure, too.

Huge apols for scaring some of you unnecessarily.

We'll reinstate the link to make folks your Mumsnet Mates as soon as poss.

But, basically, you can rest easy. Your pics are not visible to all unless you have actively set them to be.

Helen, thanks for getting back but after I read this thread this morning, I opened my profile and the layout was different and it looked like my photos were public.

I sent you a report this morning saying that the whole thing looked different and I couldn't see how to delete the photos?

I don't think I'll be bothering with photos anymore.

Can I ask why it looked like your photos were public?

To delete a photo, you just press the Delete button next to the Save button under each photo.

Helen, there was no delete/ save button - it was just the photos, that's what I noticed. I had quite a few photos up, the baby is now 2.4Shock . There was no box that said visible to Mumsnet mates etc.

I'm well versed in the My Photos bit - precious third born Blush . But the whole page looked wiggy.

Well that's very odd indeed. It's not looking wiggy at all from here. Can you bear to send us a screenshot? And tell us how you're viewing MN (ie phone/app/laptop and with which browser)?

I was using my laptop with Explorer. It's just that if you have a gander over any pms I've sent, of which I think there's been one, you'll see that I had an issue with name changing recently.

Are you talking about PMs you sent us? I'm not aware that you have - although I can check.

Or am I misunderstanding you? Entirely possible, given my track record today Grin

No, I don't know Smile . I had an issue with name changing a while back but it was all sorted. This morning I reported my first post on this thread asking how to get rid of my photos as there was no delete button.

I will try and fire up the exceptionally old laptop later and have another look at my page.

My phone doesn't let me do anything that fancy and my only other option is my Kindle Fire and I don't think we will open that particular can of worms.
