Can we sort out symbols on iPhone app?

Am I the only one who gets strange spellings when I use symbols such as &, £, é etc.

Any chance of a return to the 'proper' emoticons too? I miss them Sad Apart from the Smile which is more warm and welcoming, I found the other one a bit PA sometimes
