"Replies may also be deleted".

I hactually think "resposnses" would be a better word.

Chaos are you necking on the christmas sherry again?

LineRunner · 27/12/2012 19:58

[vodka more like]

ouryve · 27/12/2012 19:59

I think you and MNHQ speak a different language, so it's probably understandable that you don't understand the MNHQ message. Xmas Grin

RowanTheRedNosedMumsnet · 27/12/2012 20:05

You're seriously complaining that we're not being clear enough? Grin

StNiChaolas · 27/12/2012 20:15

Well, um, yus.

OK

What's the difference between a 'reply' and a 'response', and why would the second be better? (Disclaimer: I may be being thick)

(Further disclaimer: given the size of Tech's to-do list, this conversation in almost certainly academic in more than one sense)

Apologies if I sound a bit intense Blush This is the closest I've got to a proper non-Christmas-based conversation in about a week

LineRunner · 27/12/2012 20:30

It's the Chaos Factor.

TheSecretCervixDNCOP · 27/12/2012 20:32

Arf Linerunner

StNiChaolas · 27/12/2012 20:49

Well, a reply would be to a qiestion.

A respnse could be a fuck off you trill comment to a goader.

Disclaimer: I think. Wink

'sall abaht the finesse, Rowan.

Oh I see, yes. That is a nice distinction.

LineRunner · 27/12/2012 20:56

So Chaos is it

reply = nicey nice

response = fucky fuck

?

StNiChaolas · 27/12/2012 21:05

Ach, LineRunner, nope - way too simplistic.

I reckon, a reply is to a question and a response doesnt have to be.

So if someone said "get thee out of town" which I'm suee HQ would love to a knobby pist, then that would be a respobe to be deleted, not a reply, yus?

OP posts:
youngermother1 · 27/12/2012 21:09

I think Chaos meant:
reply can only be used if it was in response to a question, whilst you can respond, but not reply, to a comment.
Therefore if the initial deleted item was a comment, no-one can reply to it, so the 'message deleted message' would suggest anyone responding to it would not be deleted. However, responders are deleted as MNHQ have unilaterally decided to change the meaning of the English language and mark them as repliers.

LineRunner · 27/12/2012 21:11

Ooooh.

Suddenly I see (in the words of K T Tungsten)

Hassled · 27/12/2012 21:13

Chaos - much as I love you, you're as wrong as a big bag of wrong things.

Nutter posts "AIBU to think that people who step on the lines on the pavement should be shot?"
Hassled posts "YABU. You're an idiot"

I am both replying to the question (is she BU?) and responding to her twattery. What are MNHQ meant to do with that?

TessGoesDirectToBethlehem · 27/12/2012 21:16

MNHQ should just say "and any more of your backchat and you'll be deleted young lady/laddie."

with a stern face smilie.

MaryChristmaZEverybody · 27/12/2012 21:18

See, I think it should say "Message deleted by Mumsnet for breaking our talk guidelines, if any of you fuckwits try to repeat bits of the deleted message you will be deleted as well".

Because that's what they mean.

MaryChristmaZEverybody · 27/12/2012 21:19

Hassled. You need that as two posts.

  1. YABU
  1. You're an idiot.

They will only delete message no 2.

youngermother1 · 27/12/2012 21:29

Mary - if we are being pedantic (and I think we are), I think you mean 'your messages will be deleted as well'.

Unless MNHQ employ a hit(wo)man

LineRunner · 27/12/2012 21:31

No we are being semantic.
