I have questions...

...if you don't mind tech.

  1. Are our IP addresses logged?
  2. How many people are registered for MN talk?
  3. How many people register then never post? and 4. If its not too personal, how much bandwidth do we guys use up?

I'm being nosey is all, but I would like to know about the IP addresses if nothing else.

please?

Pie, look, I know the baby's sleeping better now, and much more settled, but do you have just a little too much time on your hands now?

pie · 08/01/2004 13:49

Thank you aloha...these are actually the things I lie awake thinking about as I give DD2 massive 1.5 hour feeds at 3am. I've only got the energy to voice such thoughts now though!

LOl I used tohave all sorts of "good ideas" at night

princesspeahead · 08/01/2004 19:55

almost certain that ip addresses are logged as mumsnet recognises me as pph

150percent · 08/01/2004 20:03

That might be windows though pph. I added a laptop to the home network last week (same IP address) and had to put in my nickname. (Crimbo present was a wireless home network from DH so that I can surf Mumsnet from anywhere in the house - and without hogging the only broadband connection!)

SenoraPostrophe · 08/01/2004 20:05

pph - that's a cookie though. Doesn't mean the IP address is logged as all dial-up users (and some broadband users) will have a different IP every time they go on the internet.

tech · 09/01/2004 12:53

Hello Pie,

Your IP address is logged deliberately when you post a message, but not when you are just reading (except in the web server logs - all web servers log the IP adress every time someone looks at a page. Nothing ties this back to you though - and the IP address might be the address of a proxy if your ISP uses one rather than your own IP address. As mentioned, if you use dial-up you generally get a new IP address each time you dial in.)

I'm not sure exactly how many people are registered. It's somewhere around the 20,000 mark.

The total data transferred on the whole site is around 1.6 gigabytes per day.

pie · 09/01/2004 16:16

Thanks tech

I have a static IP address so I was just wondering really.

20,000??? Wow!

popsycal · 10/01/2004 20:19

20000???
so where is everyone then???

SoupDragon · 10/01/2004 20:21

Can you imagine the "discussions" we could have with 20,000 differing opinions

JanH · 10/01/2004 21:01

I'm registered twice though. (But only paid once!)

BTW I haven't had a mumsnet email for months - havem't ticked the box to say I don't want it...?

pie · 10/01/2004 21:09

I'm wondering how many of the 20,000 even know there is a talk section...and I'm wondering how many lurkers there are. Creeping me out now I'm thinking about it.

These are the winners of this week's prize - Tigermoth, Stressyhead, Tetley, Fairydust, Sebooth, Biza, Bon, Berta, Russellc and Anne1. Congrats to all but a few new names there (new to me anyway!)

popsycal · 10/01/2004 21:23

tigermoth · 11/01/2004 17:42

Lisa78 · 11/01/2004 18:04

20 000...
I must know at least ONE of them IRL

StressyHead · 12/01/2004 13:45

message withdrawn

Kayleigh · 14/01/2004 15:58

Wow stressyhead ! What's your secret ?!

fio2 · 21/01/2004 08:58

Pie I have to agree with you about how many lurkers there must be. Maybe that is why we shouldnt post such personal stuff unless we are very anon.

Carla · 21/01/2004 09:18

150percent - what a husband! All I got was a bottle of Eternity! Who's it made by? Can you do a link? I WANT ONE!
