Dearest MNHQ. I would hate to add to your workload but can we look again at having different messages when posts are deleted?

I know it's been said before, but just having 'deleted for breaking Talk Guidelines' can make one look like a bit of a cunt, tbh.

Could you not have a choice of a few standard phrases? 'message deleted for legal/copyright reasons', 'message deleted for advertising/spamming', 'message deleted for breaking Talk guidelines' etc?

I think most of us associate the standard 'deleted' message with someone having said something awful or having made a personal attack. Which is clearly not always the case.

That's true Sue. When I see the deleted due to guidelines thing I do tend to assume the poster was having a good eff and jeff and being generally despicable to all.

Which I don't mind when I am Sparkling . But in some contexts it can look a bit off - for eg my XF thread with lots of deletions due to legal reasons.

On a thread about a very, very sensitive subject. I was trying to stem the tide of poison so that others on the thread didn't get hurt.

Now, fair do's if it was a PA but to anyone looking in, it could very well appear that I have been an atrocious cunt and said something vile about the subject.

If anyone thought that I had, I would be very hurt and upset indeed.

Easy to get confuzzled over who was the cuntish poster, no? Though I appreciate that one is harder to fit into my helpful suggestions above ^.

I agree, but I think it's important to point out just how much of an arse a poster is being, for instance disabilist posts should have a message saying 'deleted for disablist comment.' So everyone knows they are an arse, then any subsequent post saying 'you were an arse for saying that.' could just have the 'breaking talk guidelines' message so posters could work out that they weren't saying anything really nasty.

And perhaps trolls could have their messages deleted and instead of the 'breaking talk guidelines' message, mnhq could post a picture of a troll instead?

Yes this would be great. I was deleted loads a few months back on a thread for just mildly arguing with the OP, however there were some other MNesr who were deleted for being really cunty, and it looked as if I had said the same things (racist comments) from reading the comments that were left.

Does that make sense? It does in my head.

Anyway it would be a good idea to have something like post deleted because she was a bit of a twat, but she was NOT cuntish like her over there or summat.

I would quite like a thread deletion option. As in 'whole thread deleted due to it being ridiculous'. Prime example being the Dog poo wheelie bin thread that has been raging since Thursday and is still going.

What is going on on that dogshit thread? I read about 50 posts and was bored to death. How can you talk about wheelie bins for neatly 600 posts? Is there a row going on and do I need to read it?

You need to revisit the thread GetOrf. It has reached fever pitch a couple of times. I opted out (my sanity made me) after a day or so when they were talking about bin men covered in poo. Read it backwards maybe?

I'm on the bin man poo thread - Sparkling is right, some people are very !!!!!! that people mind having poo in their bins. But you will have to roll up for your last chance because it's dying now. Three legs stiff in the air the other one soon to follow.

On thread deletion, am not very up on these things but I think it's very sweet the way the moderators put their heads round the door of a thread and say Evening with a just as things begin to get troublesome. It's so mumsy. But I think it does stop things turning into too much of a bunfight at the right/wrong moment.

Yes I quite like Olivia's 'Evening all'. Without saying anything. ie 'Don't bloody start' which is what she really means.

Well nobody's changed their mind sparkling. There is a general astounded feeling on all sides that people still think it's ok / not ok to put poo bags in other people's bins. People find it unbelievable or amazing (me!) that others disagree. Unless there's such a thing as a mumsnet "digging in of heels for the sake of it" in which case we need to have a name for it.
