I nc'ed yesterday....though not before being told that the name I'd picked was taken about 8 times!
I must admit I've nc a few times lately (someone in RL knows I use MN)
But can we not volunteer up our old names that we no longer plan on using?
Or maybe there could be an option on registration to say we no longer need these names...and a generic email sent to those who haven't logged on for a long period of time?
Could it happen?? Would anyone give up their old names?

There has been a name amnesty in the past but I think it was hard work iirc.

I really want to be able to shorten to mike but it's taken by someone who I don't think has ever posted :(

Maisydaisy34 · 10/10/2012 17:50

Also do you keep your name on MN even if you Havnt logged on in say over a year or two?

Maisydaisy34 · 10/10/2012 17:52

Ooo a name amnesty would be good, they should do one every 6 months or once a year,
I would also like a shorter username because I'm not witty enough to think of a really funny name

lljkk · 10/10/2012 19:34

That's funny, sometimes I'd like a very very long name, like
"My children are toe rags and I'm drinking too much wine"
But it's just a tad beyond the allowed limits. :)

UltraBOF · 10/10/2012 19:36

They can't do the name amnesty ever again because it sent them all batshit with stress, apparently. I think adjusting mentioned it in the recent webchat.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/10/2012 19:38

The problem with a name amnesty is what happens to all the posts you made under your old name(s)?

OliviaLMumsnet · 10/10/2012 19:39

JenFrankenstein · 10/10/2012 20:28

If you mention it then you get put on the list

RandallPinkFloyd · 10/10/2012 20:33

From what I remember the NN amnesty made Tech's balls ache tremendously Sad

MikeLitorisBites · 10/10/2012 20:43

Can they just give up the names that have never been used?

I really want Mike. I don't want to name change completely but there are certain threads where my normal name isn't appropriate.

ShirleyRots · 10/10/2012 20:51

I want Shirls.

MikeLitorisBites · 10/10/2012 20:54

Maybe we should tantrum ask nicely shirls.

JenFrankenstein · 10/10/2012 21:03

Maybe it would help if you had sent Justine a bribe birthday present

ShirleyRots · 10/10/2012 21:03

Pllllleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaasssssssseeeeeeeeeeee mnhq

MikeLitorisBites · 10/10/2012 21:20

I can make Justine a birthday cake or just buy lots of gin

JenFrankenstein · 10/10/2012 21:30

She's got a lovely pair dontcha know

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/10/2012 12:24

What about an option in Nickname History to 'delete this name'?

MikeLitorisBites · 11/10/2012 13:17

What would happen to posts under those names though?

I think used names are harder to sort out than unused ones.

lljkk · 11/10/2012 13:32

I like a "delete NN" option.
MNHQ could colour code the posts to imply it's a defunct registration.
Just like they should colour code OP posts that are more than 4 months old to help alert us to zombie threads

Maisydaisy34 · 11/10/2012 16:55

A few of the names I've used have only been used in chat so try would disappear anyway but lljk's idea is a good one
C'mon Olivia don't put me on the list lets have a name amnesty, if not for me do it for the.....ummm....children?

OP posts:
Maisydaisy34 · 11/10/2012 16:58

On a serious note though do companies make names available again after the user hasn't logged on for a period of time?
What will the people of the future do for usernames?

Absy got Absy.

How did she do that? It was one of the "taken but never used" names.

MikeLitorisBites · 11/10/2012 17:33

How did you manage that abs?
