Human rights topic - anyone interested?

To talk about rights generally. This sort of stuff:

  • women's rights (without necessarily coming from a feminist analysis)
  • children's rights
  • disability rights
  • what happens when there is a conflict between rights, eg male circumcision.
  • rights to be free from violence, eg DV on women, men and children

And everything else HR related.

Yes we're very happy to give this a go. We'll start asap with small proviso that if it's not used we'll nuke it, as per usual.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Bunfight central!! I predict it will nuke itself :o

ThePan · 02/07/2012 14:23

Justine...Can it be labelled Human Rights/Equalities please? The Human Rights are sourced from outside the UK as I understand it (Europe, various conventions over the years) and Equalities are within the UK in legislation passed in the UK. But both speak to dignity and freedoms from persection/oppression.

dreamingbohemian · 02/07/2012 14:51

I'm not sure what you mean Pan -- do you mean the legal bases for rights?

I think the section will go beyond legalities, so Human Rights would include everything, even UK-based.

dreamingbohemian · 02/07/2012 14:52

And thanks again Justine! Smile

ThePan · 02/07/2012 15:01

dreaming - I mean "Human Rights" has a specific legal reference i.e. Human Rights Act 2000, incorporating Euro stuff. Equalities is what actually happens in the UK, though other countries will have similar legislation.
No I don't want a dry-old-bone of a topic - and I'm not not bothered about the naming of a topic. Which goes against all current MN fashions, I know. Grin

ThePan · 02/07/2012 15:02

I'm not that bothered...

I'd blame the phone, but I'm not using one.....

dreamingbohemian · 02/07/2012 15:16

Ah, I see Pan Smile

I'm not that bothered either, but I'd tend toward just Human Rights to keep it simple.

ThePan · 02/07/2012 17:50

"If it's not used we'll nuke it, as per usual........"yes, rather like the aforementioned "World Cup 2010" topic, that hasn't seen a thread started in there since.....umm...2010!!

EclecticShock · 02/07/2012 19:11

Yes, very interested. Thanks for the thread.

greenblue · 02/07/2012 19:19

Sounds good! I'm interested (personally and professionally) in human trafficking, would be a great place to discuss this.

OliviaLMumsnet · 02/07/2012 20:50

@ScroobiousPip

I've been working on the assumption that they are omnipresent and all knowing...

Oh yes. May well name change to OmniscientOliviaMNHQ

Human rights is a great idea well done the OP for suggesting it. I too am very interested in intersectional stuff as everyone has multiple identities not just woman, mother, worker, disabled, man, grandfather etc etc. I think some recognition that this leads to conflict within ourselves and with others will be very interesting.

Leithlurker · 02/07/2012 21:39

Erm I know boasting is not the done thing, but I am so chuffed with myself that I am the fist to post on a brand new shiny area of mumsnet.

I would like to thank my mum obviously, and all those lovely people behind the scenes who make all the "magic happen. I would also like to thank Apple cos I am so worth it. I just never though

ScroobiousPip · 03/07/2012 08:15

Woohooooo! Thank you Olivia!!!

See you over there everyone...

Would it be worth making the HR section private like OTBT?

Some of the issues may be highly sensitive especially if they concern the UK.

We are going to change that to World Cup which we roll out every 4 years like christmas (except that comes more frequently I believe Grin)
