Read threads not changing colour

I've written this twice now and it's not posted. I would like to say that the first two attempts were witty and concise, this one probably won't be as I have lost the will to live (after forgetting to c&p the second time).

Right, for the last year ish, probably about once every couple of months, the threads I have read stop changing colour once I've read them (which is very annoying). I discovered that deleting cookies works and that everything goes back to normal. (this is a pain as I then have to remember every password for every site that i use). However, it did it again at the weekend and now the threads change colour when I've read them, but as soon as I navigate away from MN then when I come back it's like I've not read anything. It's making MN unusable, and making me sad :(

Is anyone else having this problem? I mentioned it to some techie friends and they seem to think it's a problem your end. I use IE if that makes the slightest bit of difference.

Hi, this is normally a problem in your browser where it gets confused about what URLs you have and haven't read. If you delete your temporary internet files that normally fixes it. This Microsoft page tells you how to do that

Thanks Tech

Right, I'm back. Have deleted all my temporary internet files and it did work...for about 10 minutes. I have been away from MN and now come back and it is like I have never been here. Any other tips.... :(

I have to add as well that it is only these forums that it happens to me on (and I use a few others)

Mine is doing this too! Laptop has had a visit to the repair shop today (due to a toddler and juice situation), and has been stripped and re started no idea of technical terms.

But this has been going on for two or three days, and is still the same. I'm confused enough as it is in life, I can't be doing with this!!

Oreocrumbs, sorry it's happening to you as well, but I am glad it's not only me.

Try deleting history and cookies. It does normally work for me and it IS working for me now, but only till I navigate away from the page. I don't really want to have to go through this malarky everytime I want to look at MN and it doesnt really solve the problem unless I start writing down the names of all the threads I've read and then highlighting them with a highlighting pen.

Happy to help Grin. I'm to have a play around with cookies and history Confused, I shall report back.

oreocrumbs · 25/06/2012 20:24

Ok, I seem to be back up and running! Thank you very much Smile. I hope you can get sorted soon.

I love mumsnet, I really do learn something new every day.

Have you thought about using a different browser?

Squitch · 25/06/2012 21:01

I have thought about using a different browser, but i like IE (I know I'm probably in the minority) - and it's not like its some weird obscure browser that only 1 person in a million uses. I just wanted to know if it was a MN problem or a me problem. I know deleting internet files and cookies is a quick fix, but I don't understand why this problem only happens on this forum. (But then I don't work in IT or really understand how this whole internet malarky happens) - Tech, if you can fix it or tell me how to fix it i'll swap you for piano lessons!

Fair enough.

I use mainly Firefox but also have Chrome installed. Both are far more reliable and stable than IE in my experience. The only time threads I have looked at revert to the unread colour is when MN moves them to a different forum and that is because the move breaks the link.
