Q for the techies re highlighting

If we want to highlight something in brackets, can you perform your majick so we don't have to put a space after and before brackets? what I mean is, say:

I was being perfectly reasonable (take note, wildwoman) works, but

I was being perfectly reasonable (take note, wildwoman) doesn't! but if I leave a space after and before my brackets...

I was being perfectly reasonable ( take note, wildwoman ) works again!

C'mon! Abracadabra! Abracadabra!

Hmm I am not a techytype but shurely if you putting something in parentheses (and I am a massive fan of the bracket, my emails are littered with 'em) then it is an aside no, and so shouldn't have bold in it at all?

The parser isn't detecting the symbols if they are not preceded by a space character. When you type * the software is turning it into HTML instructions so that your browser knows how to display the text in a different way.

Methinks it has something to do with trying to distinguish between the literal character "^" for example (which crops up in conversation so often) and the command.
