TECH? Oh, TECH! What are you doing?

Both last night and tonight around about this time MN has slowed to a crawl for me. Threads take ages to open. Switching forums takes ages. Then when I do get to the next forum threads I have looked at before have reverted to blue but are still bookmarked when I eventually get them open.

We love you, we really do. But what are you doing?

Hmmm. A couple of commas wouldn't have gone amiss to break up that last sentence in paragraph 1 a bit.

It's working ok for me

OnlyANinja · 19/01/2012 21:44

It's fine for me - are you sure it's not just you?

GladysLeap · 19/01/2012 22:29

I'm getting the same problem at about 7.15 every night. Think it may be my internet provider, but then yesterday did manage to get onto FB Ok while MN was down.

HopeEternal · 20/01/2012 06:30

I don't think it's me. This is a brand new high spec laptop and was fine tuned by a friend who does that sort of thing for a living.

I normally have about 6 or 7 tabs open and if I switch to one of the other sites it goes like greased lightening. It's only on MN that the treacle effect crawls in.

mejon · 20/01/2012 14:27

I'm having problems with threads I've read not changing colour like they did before too. I'm now clicking on things I've already read and wasting valuable MNing time!!! My laptop's a week or so old but the colour changing was working fine until yesterday so doubt it is the computer at fault.

Hello. We're not doing anything, honest! But the site's been phenomenally busy over the last few evenings - and that can slow things down a bit sometimes.

fruitshootsandheavesupafurball · 20/01/2012 14:51

mmm now either tech is so incredibly busy he had to send Helen to answer

or

He's actually on holiday in the Caribbean with his Christmas bonus.

fruitshootsandheavesupafurball · 20/01/2012 14:52

(In the interest of sexual equality/discrimination and whatever I should have said he/she as I'm sure MNHQ's Tech's come in both genders)

He got a Christmas bonus? Shock

And what's wrong with my answer, fruitshoots? Tis the truth, you know..

HopeEternal · 20/01/2012 16:30

Thanks, Helen.

I can understand that high traffic can slow things down.

But what about previously opened threads reverting to blue in the thread list? That seems to happen to me just after I've trudged through the treacle of the slow down. I look down the list of say Chat threads, see one in blue, think "I'm sure I've read that. Why isn't it light purple?". Then when I open it, I'm taken straight to my previously bookmarked place.

OP posts:
HelenMumsnet · 20/01/2012 17:46

Well, the colour thing shouldn't be happening, for sure.

Are you def looking at the thread title rather than the Topic title? Sorry if that sounds patronising but worth checking...

And are you using Classic or MN New?

mejon · 20/01/2012 21:31

I'm having the same problem as Hope - I think I'm using MN New but it is the same as I've been using for months and I've not changed anything. All my threads are staying blue rather than turning purple for the ones I've read. My MN's not been running slow though Smile.

HopeEternal · 21/01/2012 09:28

Thanks again, Helen.

I'm using MN New.

The thread title colour change is just occasional for me and tends to just be the odd random thread.

For example when I went into Chat this morning and looked down the list of threads the one titled "I fail to unsderstand why ANYONE would air their dirty laundry in public like this?" was blue even though I had looked at it yesterday. When I opened the thread I was taken straight to the last post I had bookmarked.

A thought has occurred to me. I think I've noticed that a thread title reverts to blue if MNHQ have moved it from one forum to another (Relationships to OTBT for example). Was the thread I just mentioned moved to chat from another forum overnight by any chance?

OP posts:
mejon · 21/01/2012 10:13

It's still happening with all of mine.

HopeEternal · 21/01/2012 10:45

mejon it might help HQ if you also tell them what you're using to access MN.

Phone? Ipad? Laptop? PC?

Browser?

OP posts:
QuintessentiallyShallow · 21/01/2012 10:49

erm. Are you running an automated back up at that time? That could slow your system down.

HopeEternal · 21/01/2012 11:05

No, I'm not, QS. And as I said in my OP, it's only MN that slows - all my other open sites are fine.

OP posts:
mejon · 21/01/2012 14:31

Thanks Hope. MN I'm on a laptop using Internet Explorer 7. My problem's only been happening for the last couple of days and I've done nothing new/different.

hugglymugly · 21/01/2012 20:39

I have experienced the reversion to the "unread" colour, but that's when I've clicked the wrong options on "clear history". I have also experienced the reversion when MNHQ have moved a topic. But there's also the possibility that a browser upgrade might not correctly transfer all the settings.

As for the slow speeds, I have occasionally wondered where the servers hosting MN are. It's a very big forum, so needs not only quite a bit of space to hold our pearls of wisdom/smutty jokes, but also a fast response time.

There's another forum I participate in and, although the owner is in the UK, the site/forum is hosted in the US. Sometimes that forum runs slow, which might be due to problems with the hosting servers, or congestion in the UK-US pipe, or that the string across the Atlantic has got a bit soggy.

mejon · 21/01/2012 22:04

Ah hugglymugly - I've just done a 'clear history' and I've now got the purple 'read threads' thing back. Thank you so much!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 21/01/2012 22:19

Yes, I posted that accidentally in AIBU and am scared of the thread monitors, so did some flutteryeyelashery to get it moved.

Soz.

HopeEternal · 21/01/2012 23:25

Chaos don't you dare apologise!

But thanks for confirming that my bit of lateral thinking went in the right direction.

Tech · 22/01/2012 15:54

Hi HopeEternal, if we move a thread from topic aaa to topic bbb then its URL - the address in the bar up top - changes e.g. from /Talk/aaa/13456-title to /Talk/bbb/13456-title.

Your browser keeps track of what URLs you've visited and shows them purple. When we move threads, they get a new URL and your browser will show the new URL in blue - because the new one will be an adress it has never visited. Once you look at the thread again in its new location, the link should go purple again.
