My Active Conversations has dropped

Flisspaps · 06/01/2012 16:13

When I click 'Active' it appears my screen is blank apart from the banners and the ads (so where the Active Conversation list should be, it isn't) and then when I scroll down, it's way down at the bottom of my screen. I wouldn't know it was there if I hadn't scrolled.

None of the other topics appear to be doing this Confused Is it just me?

Maybe the Tech's have decided to add some 'designery' white space?

have you tried refreshing?

lubeybooby · 06/01/2012 16:28

It will be because of a too long set of charchters in a thread title, eg when someone uses too many !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!s

Find the offending thread and hide it to sort it out.

Or better still, report the offending thread to us and we'll sort it out the title for you all.

Trills · 06/01/2012 17:11

Is that the explanation for why that happens? When a thread like that just happens to be the top one?

lubeybooby · 06/01/2012 17:20

Yes when a thread like that is in active convos it pushes the list down the page causing the blank effect on first glance.

Last time it happened to me there was a thread requesting help from a lawyer with loads of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!s all together - I hid it and it fixed it.

Long thread titles are fine when it's words with spaces in between but when the charachters are all together it buggers the page up.

Tech · 06/01/2012 17:41

Hi, In the past we had a thing in the thing that used to insert spaces into the long words or strings of !!!! in titles - to stop this happening. But now the space for the title is narrower because of the new column that some people have (the OP name and time thing) and so the spaces that the thing in the thing puts in aren't close enough together to stop some titles making the thread titles too long for the space. We'll fix properly at some point. Sorry for the troubles.....

Trills · 06/01/2012 17:48

Or you could make the space wider again my combining "latest" and "by" in the same way that "started by" has both a name and a timestamp... Just a suggestion.

Tech · 06/01/2012 17:49

Yes that is what we are goung to do. It's a bit crackers the way it is now.

Tech · 06/01/2012 17:50

going even. Must use preview

Trills · 06/01/2012 17:51

Does anyone actually use preview?

When starting a thread maybe, or if linking, but not when they are just writing some words, surely?

(I know you have analytics and you could look a this if you wanted and didn't have a million other things to do )

Tech · 06/01/2012 17:55

Not sure actually. I'm not sure we'd get if from GA outta-da-box though without a bit of setup. Preview is an http post rather than a get, so the URL is just /Talk the same as the talk home page. I'm not sure GA would see them as different without some extra setup on our side to set a custom variable on a preview page, which would be a minor faff. But you have piqued my interest now so I might have a look at it (real work avoidance strategies alive and well.)

Trills · 06/01/2012 17:57

Somehow making graphs that nobody asked for is much more interesting than making one that someone has specifically asked for, isn't it? :o

fruitshootsandheaves · 06/01/2012 18:41

I much preferred my white space possibility to all the subsequent very technical explanations

and I ALWAYS use preview being so anal about spelling and grammar

Pascha · 06/01/2012 18:55

"the thing in the thing"

I love it when Tech gets technical.

Flisspaps · 06/01/2012 23:34

Thank you - it sorted out straight after I posted so I buggered off. It did appear that a thread started by an MN bod with a rather long name appeared to have been altered after though, perhaps that was the offender?

Happening to me today. If it helps, the adverts were Boden and No7.
I didn't notice any long thread titles, sorry.
