has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

OP posts:
wannaBe · 16/12/2011 14:54

no, it wouldn't save it and post it later.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 14:54

there is a risk if you accidentally clicked LIKE and then clicked POST not CLOSE it would link to your dh if he doesn't make a point to log out though.

I think everyone saying clicking close makes it post anyway are scare mongering as i tried it yesterday and it did not post.

If you are very worried go to facebook.com before logging in to mumsnet and confirm everyone is logged out before By clicking the log out button before mumsnetting.

IAmFuckingPissedOff · 16/12/2011 14:58

Thanks for that.

I just can't see why anyone wants to link the two sites. But then, I don't understand this wish you tell everyone your business on FB every five minutes either [old gimmer emoticon].

IAmFuckingPissedOff · 16/12/2011 14:59

Sorry "wish to tell everyone...."

Get0rf · 16/12/2011 14:59

I do see the point that wannabe and others are making that essentially if we don't want private information to get out there, then don't post it on MN in the first place.

However, I think the like button will create more opportunity for people to shit stir. I started a thread a few months back talking about abortion, and the guilt (or lack of) which people feel about it. It was rather emotive. Somehow, a lot of posters who had never been seen on MN before or since (or namechangers) posted a lot of vitriolic stuff. I also got a lot of PMs calling me a vile cunt etc. I think the like button would make it easier to link such threads to manic pro-lifer sites, and people could just do it to cause trouble. Same as the feminism topic, or anything remotely conytroversial.

I don't see why MN is pandering to the lowest common denominator lurker. Me and Maryz and others asked ths on the thread about this subject last week. If MNHQ want to do this to generate a revenue stream, then fine, admit it, don't be so disingenuous and treat the protestors like fools by saying 'ooh it is something new and we think people would like it'.

I think it is very shortsighted - by liking a thread you are obviously taking the discussion away from MN - poeple will just talk about the thread in question on FB instead. What's the point in that - surely you would prefer people to have a discussion on MN itself.

HippoPottyMouth · 16/12/2011 15:03

I'm not scare mongering. I'm not against the button, it doesn't bother me at all in fact.

But I clicked on like above and then clicked 'Close' instead of 'Post to facebook wall', refreshed myfacebook wall on another tab and there is it on my wall.. I had to remove post and unlike from my wall to remove it again. Fact.

wannaBe · 16/12/2011 15:04

iam tbh fwiw I don't know why anyone would want to either. I'm not on fb any more (disabled my account a couple of months ago) but I am on twitter, and although I have mumsnetters as followers I still don't see the need to post mn threads on there or link to here in any way, although I do link the other way around in that I have posted my twitter nn on here to gain more followers Wink and my twitter is linked to my blog so does appear on the bloggers network when I tweet my blog posts. But that is different I think since it's not personal iyswim.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 15:04

unfortunate side effect of our modern world. This is why I'm not worried about the LIKE button...because those people were already linking.. they've just updated the page to reflect this.

MistleTobyLeWolef · 16/12/2011 15:06

My point exactly. Nice to read it again, in a far more eloquent way :o

CrispLeCrisp · 16/12/2011 15:07

Then the button should be named 'link' not 'like' then Calmdown. By pressing it you are not just liking it

Civilon · 16/12/2011 15:08

Do I have to read the whole thread to catch up?

Anyone good at summarising - and explaining - what it means for moi?

MistleTobyLeWolef · 16/12/2011 15:09

I would be very interested in seeing stats on this: how many MN links are posted elsewhere now the 'like' button is so freely available. I think you'd find that you would be wrong.

IAmFuckingPissedOff · 16/12/2011 15:10

See, what Hippo just said does worry me.

Suppose I have a bottle glass or two of wine, and click on "like" by mistake. Then I close rather than post. And logout.

dd then gets on and finds the thread on her Facebook wall when she logs in.

Is this even remotely possible? Because so far Mumsnet have admitted it isn't working properly, that it is appearing on boards it shouldn't, that cancelling the like doesn't actually cancel it. In addition, Facebook change their settings all the time.

I am just not happy (in fact, I'm fucking pissed off, in case anyone hadn't noticed).

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 15:10

Anyone using FB knows what that means crisp

precisely bugger all civilon

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 15:13

make sure fb is logged out before you MN and click close not post. if it was a problem mnhq will be working on fixing the close/post function.

IAmFuckingPissedOff · 16/12/2011 15:16

Yep, I think they are working on that.

TBH, I think they made a balls of it, and put it up before they were ready.

I suspect they will take it off a lot of topics, make it opt-outable (or hideable iyswim) and fix the bloody thing.

It might have saved a lot of trouble if they had done all that before sending it out live, wouldn't you think.

And, btw, I know to a lot of you this seems like a storm in a teacup, but for those of us with very strange lives it is a very big deal. Some of us can't talk about issues in real life, mumsnet is the only place we can do it, and for some people the integration of all these sites and the resultant integration of real life and online life is taking away the little support we have Sad.

Bring back moldies, all is forgiven Grin.

HippoPottyMouth · 16/12/2011 15:33

CalmDown, I did click close, not post. I am not a buffoon. It still appeared on my facebook wall (i am auto logged in to facebook)

So yes, IAm, your scenario could happen, if you DD leaves herself logged in to facebook accidentally, or if anyone else uses a PC and has auto login set up.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 15:35

Oh for the record I mix fed from birth and had to stop totally bf at 3 months due to no milk supply. I didn't bf till dd was 2 or anything like that- but i would have because it would have been better for her than formula. No point in pretending that what I give her is the ideal- it isn't.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 15:36

uh wrong thread Grin

This is the cock up glitch the Tech team is working right now to fix, HippoPottyMouth, as we posted up/downthread

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 15:37

hippo as so eloquently just demonstrated by me...human computer errors do happen. Especially to those who use fancier gadgets than my aging lap top.

estya · 16/12/2011 15:37

facebook is our public 'face', MN is our private one. Its just worrying to mix the two.
For example, if there was a video camera in your house you would lose your privacy.
There may not be anything you do in your living room that you wouldn't do in your front garden, but you still want to keep the wall of the house there for privacy.

I'll never use the 'like' button. Not least because i don't feel the need to announce to the world that I use MN.
And I don't really want those sorts of people to use MN either. This is a better sort of site. I hope this isn't the first step down the slope to mediocrity.

AChristmouseTail · 16/12/2011 15:41

I thought the whole point of having a 'like' button on here was to say that you liked the thread. NOT that you liked the thread and it meant everyone could then see all of the posts and more importantly posters on Facebook!

If I press 'like' it appears on my wall. If someone I don't know presses like, the whole thread, including my posts appears on their page? Yes????

Not good. Not good at all.

estya · 16/12/2011 15:53

On the other hand I would like to 'like' posts in a MN only way. Like you can rate a review on amazon - it says '5 out of 6 people found this helpful'

There could be a button we press to say we find a post helpful or funny, then that person would see that their contribution was appreciated without the thread being filled up with 'haha PMSL'

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 15:53

@AChristmouseTail

No, all that appears on their FB wall is the MN logo, the thread title and a link back to the thread on MN.
