Can I ask about "boak"

Shakey1500 · 10/10/2011 23:16

Just curious as to how it was "decided" (?) that the word "boak" captured the sensation of heaving? Grin Actually, I'm assuming that's what it means?

Is there a thread anyone can link me to?

My own personal description would be more like a "huuppp". Was that banded about at all?

The first rule of [boak] club is that you don't talk about [boak] club...

AMumInScotland · 11/10/2011 09:37

It's a good Scots word!

GarrottingItLaldy · 11/10/2011 09:41

Boak is an extremely common euphemism for vomiting on these shores (NI). I assume it must be commonly used in other parts too

Besides, screeching at your mate did you see the size of Smallship's spider? Oh mummy....I near huppped would just be ridiculous, wouldn't it?

wiktionary def

It describes the sensation of gastric regurgitation before and during expulsion.

It can also be used to describe an off putting emotion eg 'His feet were mingin' and gied me the boak'.

I didn't realise it was an actual word/phrase as it were. Thought it represented the "sound" of heaving which is why I thought "huupp" a nearer match.

Ah well, you learn something new every day :)

Thinking about it, I would imagine a club would not be much fun. Grin

It is a classic onomatopoeia and regional (Scottish) variations are sometimes called 'shouting for Ralph or Huey' - depending on the gastric content, velocity of projectile, bad fish supper etc.
