POLL NOW CLOSED. Would you like to have the option to Quote posts on Talk threads (like MNHQ can)? Please come and cast your vote

Hello.

We've had a few people asking us to extend to everyone MNHQ's Quote function (you know, the thingie where we can quote another person's post in our posts).

But we have also clocked a fair few folk who would rather Talk stayed as it is and didn't have a Quote function on threads.

So we have opened up a little poll to find out what the true picture is.

So what do you think? To quote or not to quote?

Do please feel free to discuss the issue with other Mumsnetters here on this thread, and please do vote and help us decide. (We'll leave this up for a good few days to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute their tuppence ha'penny.)

NB: as it involves a bit of Tech work, we won't roll out the Quote option unless there is a clear majority in favour of it and, if there were, we would most likely test it in a specific topic (such a Chat) before putting it everywhere - just to check it wouldn't cause havoc.

Thanks v much, MNHQ

First step on a slippery slope to avatars and tickers...

SoupDragon · 21/09/2011 19:59

"I would like it, but thin you need way of editing the post you are quoting down so you are only highlighting the relevant bit."

yes, because if you can't be arsed to cut and paste, you will take the time to edit a quote.

ReadRideABikeSwim · 21/09/2011 19:59

i vote NO

RedBlanket · 21/09/2011 21:46

Soupdragon - c&p on my phone is a PITA. Much easier to delete loads of stuff though.

I can see I'm in the minority though.

Valpollicella · 21/09/2011 23:50

Aw Justine....

You'll be going back on your word if you go ahead with this....

Quote facility is only planned on webchats - think they will work much more efficiently with that in place.

Valpollicella · 22/09/2011 00:08

Oh....and just another reminder of MNHQ's stance - from January

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 24-Jan-11 21:39:18
Re deleting. It would make a nonsense of the boards - people reply so quickly - if you were able to change your posts, replies could make no sense. Tbh that's why we have the preview button.
We've discussed a quote facility before - we've developed this for webchats and mnhq. Be very happy to roll that out on the site, but when previously canvassed folks were, on balance, anti the idea.

RedBlanket - "you need way of editing the post you are quoting down so you are only highlighting the relevant bit."

AdamTech (on a recent thread about Mumsnet usernames appearing in some Google search to do with password encryption) trimmed a piece from a previous post and quoted it in a box, so that has been shown to be possible. Doesn't say what post (date/time) which could be a problem if there's a long gap though... mind you, I don't always state date/time, either :)

Valpollicella - quoting a post from 31-Aug-10 cuts little ice for me - the net moves and if something had been stated 6+ years ago, would you expect it to remain policy "for all time" ?

Also since Justine said "only planned" that gives leeway to change those plans !!!!

Tee2072 - "But would lurve to be able to hide posters."

Me too. But would also find the ability to agree with someone via a "thumbs up" button very useful, too, and at other times to disagree with a "thumbs down".

dearprudence · 22/09/2011 22:29

Good god, no! A thousand times no. (Thanks all the same.)

DaveTheChippy · 23/09/2011 07:50

Did I miss the vote?
I would've voted NO.

HelenMumsnet · 23/09/2011 09:39

Morning. The poll has now closed.

Votes have been counted and verified by our independent adjudicator and it's an overwhelming vote NOT to have a Quote function (298 for no; 149 for yes, with a special mention to the 37 going for the Mavis 'I don't really care' option).

So, no Quote function it is

Thanks so much for all your votes.

I very much like the fact that the No's were exactly double that of the very wrong Yes's. That pleases my very mildly autistic brain.

And the 37 Mavis luvvers are just beige.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2011 12:21

Jack Dee did a very funny sketch once about the sort of people who take the time to vote 'don't know or care' in polls. His disdain summed up the whole thing perfectly.

Thank Thor the majority of MNers voted the right way.

LoveBeingAMummyAgain · 23/09/2011 12:23

Thank god for that, as I mn by my phone bow it would have been I right pain.

Hope this isn't going to cone up again for a long time.

GetOrfMo1Land · 23/09/2011 14:24

Why bother voting for the third way woolly 'I don't care' option.

Fucking liberal democrats. Grin

Thank god we won't get quotes. It would have been WRONG.

So MN stays in the dark ages. Big whoop.

I want to know who the don't care people are. People who don't give a shit strongly enough to vote that way I think I like Grin
