I just started a thread in AIBU asking pro-choice MNers to read an article and email their MPs, it has disappeared.

Why is that? There was no abuse, no argument, no selling, no advertising. I haven't received an email explaining the decision. Is this moderation or censorship? Can you explain please?

Shock at MNHQ deleting the way described above.

MNHQ are usually better than that? non?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 29/08/2011 15:38

OK - have re-read talk guidelines and there is nothing about voting threads or about petitions.

edam · 29/08/2011 15:39

Well done, Norma, so wtf is Catherine on about?

edam · 29/08/2011 15:42

(Have reported your post in order to get HQ's attention and asked HQ 'wtf are you on about, it doesn't seem to be in your talk guidelines?')

usualsuspect · 29/08/2011 15:42

Someone started a thread after the riots asking if all e-petitions could have their own topic

MNHQ replied saying they didn't allow any links to petitions on MN and they would delete any they knew about

I never knew that was MN policy though

edam · 29/08/2011 15:48

HQ are talking bollocks IME. I've been here for eight years now and have seen loads of links to e-petitions, never heard of them being banned. Why should we be prevented from raising awareness of e-petitions? MN isn't in charge of our political or social opinions.

SquongebobSparepants · 29/08/2011 15:51

The 'please vote for my dd/cat/whatever' threads were annoying though, we were inundated at one point awhile ago, and I think they are unfiar as they turn 'who is genuinely best' competitions into 'who can get the most complete strangers to vote for you'
I reported one as they were in direct competition with a cause close to my heart only I wasn't vote begging.

epetitions are a completely different matter though.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 29/08/2011 15:51

I haven't been around much recently (and was in France on holiday for the period of the riots) so would have no way of knowing about this apparent policy. If it is a policy it should be published in the talk guidelines.

usualsuspect · 29/08/2011 15:51

Thats what I thought I was a bit Hmm at the time ,but that particular thread was deleted almost immediately so someone must have reported it

GypsyMoth · 29/08/2011 16:01

Nadine dorries is my local mp, could be fun!

HelenMumsnet · 29/08/2011 18:01

Hello all.

Just to add to CatherineMNHQ's earlier post - and hopefully clear up any remaining confusion about petition links...

We do have a policy of deleting "vote for me/my DD/my dog/my maiden aunt in this competition/award/online contest" threads - because we know, from the many bulges in our inbox, that these threads annoy a lot of you.

But, of course, we wouldn't normally delete a link to an online epetition that was posted on a thread discussing that very topic - although we did make a bit of a mistake over that today Blush.

If, however, someone started 7,000 threads about the same epetition or posted 7,000 duplicate posts all over the shop, all linking to the same epetition, we'd probably class that as spamming and bring the delete button into action.

Hope that's all a little clearer

Thank you, that sounds far more sensible. So, what happened with the 'let's not hang and flog every poor sod up before the beak in connection with the riots' thread, then?

HelenMumsnet · 29/08/2011 18:11

@edam

Which thread was that, edam?

2shoes · 29/08/2011 18:11

can't they at least have their own topic/be in the right one?

HelenMumsnet · 29/08/2011 18:13

@2shoes

can't they at least have their own topic/be in the right one?

They should definitely be in the right topic, yes - please report them if they're not.

Not sure about having their own topic - we'll have to ponder that. Generally speaking, they'd fit nicely in In the News, no?

edam · 29/08/2011 18:18

Helen, there was a thread after the riots, started by Pan, saying 'um, doesn't it seem a bit off that people are being assumed to be guilty, remanded and then sentenced to seven years hard labour for nicking a bottle of water' (I paraphrase ever so slightly), which I am told was deleted. I could be wrong about that though, haven't actually checked. Blush

2shoes · 29/08/2011 18:19

HelenMumsnet I presume you will be moving the one in AIBU as it isn't an AIBU is it.

usualsuspect · 29/08/2011 18:19

The E-petition Tyr is referring to was as I recall in the correct topic .it was deleted straight after a thread moaning about E-petitions

edam · 29/08/2011 18:21

yes, tyr and I are talking about the same thread. It was indeed in a relevant topic - poss 'In the News' or 'Politics', can't recall.

Hmm, doesn't ring any bells we me, edam

Are you mentioning it because it was linking to an epetition?

HelenMumsnet · 29/08/2011 18:24

@2shoes

HelenMumsnet I presume you will be moving the one in AIBU as it isn't an AIBU is it.

Sure thing. Could you do us a favour, though, and report it to us, please, 2shoes? It does make moving it about six squillion times easier.

usualsuspect · 29/08/2011 18:25

I'm not sure who started it ,but the opening post was a link to an E-petition not to evict council tenants and stop benefits

HelenMumsnet · 29/08/2011 18:27

@edam

yes, tyr and I are talking about the same thread. It was indeed in a relevant topic - poss 'In the News' or 'Politics', can't recall.

Ah, OK. Well, if it was a normal, nice, non-bunfighty, non troll-hunty thread with a nice, well-behaved little link to an epetition on it, it probably shouldn't have been deleted.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 29/08/2011 18:32

Who did you leave in charge? Is this Rowan's fault? Whoever pressed the delete button needs to go and sit in the corner and think about what they did.
