"Smiley" help: I'm looking to the right...

Hello, I can't put "smileys" in. The intstructions say:

Links and "Smileys"
We have our own set of smiley or emoticons. And a set of shortcuts to allow you to bold or italicise words or even cross them out (for comic effect). To find them - with instructions on how to put them into your posts ? look to the right of the Add Your Message Here box.

But I see no instructions and when I type :) it comes up as :) and everyone else has round, sunny faces. I'm feeling left out. Can you help? Thank you! :D

Well this is embarrassing - my "not a sunny face" example has now come up as a sunny face. Lol. But my :D hasn't. It's all very hit and miss.

They fibbed - it's not to the right, it's at the bottom!

Now that one I just did was meant to be a "big grin". Bear with me, I'll get the hang of it...
