Underneath the box where you type your message is a whole list of emoticons and how to type them.

You use square brackets and then the key word, so is actually [ grin ], except without the spaces.

There are two that you can type by using 'standard' typing, so a smiley face can be achieved by typing : ) but again, with no space in between the characters. You did a sad face by typing : (.

Where are the square brackets?
