McDonalds Ads - tell us how do you feel about them folks?

Good day MNetters,
We've been asked if we'd host ads for McDonalds, so we thought we'd ask what you think. Would you object to banner ads (ie like the one at the top of the page) on Mumsnet?
Let us know.

But, yes, thank you for asking :)

ModreB · 04/03/2011 17:55

I have no objection, I am old enough to make my own mind up I think!

I rarely pay attention to the ads anyway.

Shakirasma · 04/03/2011 18:03

I have no problem with it.

I don't take any notice of the ads anyway, and as long as it's not full of subliminal messages then it's not going to force anyone to eat there is it.

It's an advert, not an instruction.

Ohforfoxsake · 04/03/2011 18:04

If Macdonalds are allowed to advertise on here I will be bitterly disappointed with MN.

Of course people have a choice not to buy it, but its 'a treat innit?'

It's not just about the over-processed shit food, that's the least offensive bit. It's everything else it stands for. And the way it is everywhere and so acceptable.

It would definately be time to leave. MN wouldn't be the place I thought it was.

MilaMae · 04/03/2011 18:17

I find this "oh we know it's awful for kids and the environment but hey it's everywhere and we'll make loads of money" attitude totally crap-and sad.I honestly expected better.

Why bother with complaining, campaigning about anything?

Why can't a site support ethical, decent companies,? Is it really that difficult?

Mcdonalds will make money out of it,they wouldn't be approaching mn if they didn't know that. Yes I'm perfectly able to not buy said hideous food but people will be swayed to buy as erm thats what advertising is for. For mn to promote and support such a crap product just sends out dreadful signals.

MrsGangly · 04/03/2011 18:23

Don't have an issue with it.

The site is marketing to adults rather than children.

Firm believer in everything in moderation, which could include McDonald's, as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

woollyideas · 04/03/2011 18:28

As long as it's not one of those adverts that springs out at you - you know... the ones that kind of grow and move around and flicker if you accidentally let your cursor anywhere near it.

SpringHeeledJack · 04/03/2011 18:42

I don't much care about Mucky D's in partic

all the ads get on my tits- particularly the ones what move about

I'd rather we had to pay for the site ourselves than be subjected to fucking Boden and Disney, tbh

[grump]

ambivalentaboutmarmite · 04/03/2011 18:44

Most mumsnetters are intelligent enough not to feed their families with deep-fried chewed-up abbatoir-floor scrapings and carbonated diabetes-type-2-u-like so advertise away.

AMumInScotland · 04/03/2011 20:04

I don't have the faintest problem with adverts for McDonalds - this is a website for adults, who can make their own minds up whether to buy products or not.

Ohforfoxsake · 04/03/2011 20:09

They are advertising to parents. Those with the spending power. They aren't daft. Kids see it advertised, they want it. It's on MN which is pretty well respected, so it must be alright then. I reckon it'll be a bit of a coup to get ad space on here. Not great for MN in my opinion.

Indirectly it is aimed at children. Which is why they are advertising to parents. Bet they advertise happy meals and not coffee and bagels.

LetThereBeRock · 04/03/2011 20:09

Exactly what AmuminScotland said.

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 20:17

spot on ohforfoxsake

also it's not on to advertise on kids tv so why on here (asking again)

HecateQueenOfWitches · 04/03/2011 20:18

"kids see it advertised, they want it."

I have a bloody FAB word for that.

It's called "no"

What people are saying here, is that mcdonalds are crap and they wish to make the decision that the company should be prevented from advertising because they feel that other people should not buy from them.

By all means educate, give people the information. Make sure the decision they make to buy or not to buy is an informed one. But it is their decision. I am uncomfortable with the message coming through because it sounds disturbingly like - someone feels that they should have the right to stop someone else from making a purchase that the first person has a problem with.

can you imagine how long the list could actually get?

mcdonalds
petrol
plane tickets
meat
fish
milk
etc etc

Panzee · 04/03/2011 20:19

Fine with me. But for balance you should get some people to advertise cous cous or pine nuts or something. :)

desperatelyseekingsnoozes · 04/03/2011 20:20

I am sure I have read MN saying they have turned down advertising details that were considered to be unethical. The mind boggles at who you must have turned down if McDonalds pass the test.

I woudl rather pay to use a forum tbh.

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 20:21

so why is it ok for it to be banned on tv but not on here hecate?

HecateQueenOfWitches · 04/03/2011 20:23

I didn't realise mcdonalds ads had been banned on tv.

When did that happen? I can't believe I missed that!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 04/03/2011 20:25

I'm sure I just watched one as well!

[going insane emoticon]

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 20:26

they were banned from children's tv years ago - hence midsomer murders on itv and not citv (i posted it earlier)

Panzee · 04/03/2011 20:26

It's not just Mcdonald's but all sorts of food, chocolate etc.

LadyOfTheManor · 04/03/2011 20:30

Yeah I was going to add its only childrens' tv that doesn't have the ads anymore (I think).

HecateQueenOfWitches · 04/03/2011 20:31

Ah. I hadn't even noticed.

Well, to answer the question why is it ok - I can't possibly answer that. I had no input into that decision. I cannot argue why it was ok. I didn't make it.

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 20:31

and...? surely children are around when you post on mumsnet aren't they?

unless people only post when children aren't here (haha)

AMumInScotland · 04/03/2011 20:32

But this isn't children's tv, or a children's website. It's for parents. I don't feel that I ought to buy from Boden or GLTC or go on Mark Warner holidays just because they are advertised here. And I don't believe that those companies are necessarily "good" people to do business with, or that they've been endorsed by MNHQ, just because they are advertised on here.
