McDonalds Ads - tell us how do you feel about them folks?

JustineMumsnet · 01/03/2011 16:22

Good day MNetters,
We've been asked if we'd host ads for McDonalds, so we thought we'd ask what you think. Would you object to banner ads (ie like the one at the top of the page) on Mumsnet?
Let us know.

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 05/03/2011 17:16

I'll add my vote to what Himalaya said - we could almost certainly have a more logical discussion about an overall advertising policy, without it getting down to specifics.

RoundOrangeHead · 05/03/2011 17:51

why on earth should MN have to consult us on it's advertising policy?

MilaMae · 05/03/2011 17:51

I agree re a policy,it's much needed.

Also Libra sorry I think the happy meal toy is awful and I take the McDonalds corporation as a whole. I care about kids health in other countries not just here. Look on the US site:- dollar meals, mighty kids meals,fructose/corn syrup aplenty, trans fats aplenty, shite chicken(wtf is rib meat),massssseve ingredient lists with long names....etc,etc. The UK ingredients list pop up disappears every time you look(funny that).

At the end of the day it's burgar and fries however "cleaned up" MCD reckons it is and eaten too regularly it leads to obesity and other nasties.

Also I'll never trust any company that tries to sell it's high fat, over salted food to kids by bribing with toys so I take any of their wild declarations of health with a pinch of salt to be frank.

Too many kids are overweight before they start school, obesity levels are rocketing quite clearly too many mothers are swayed by this junk food culture and buy it far too regularly.

Junk food advertising has no place on a parenting site, kids TV or anywhere else that means ads lead to a higher consumption of said shite. McDonalds want to sell more and that is why they're targeting mn. Who knows what ad it's got up it's sleeve, they've done their research and know they'll sell more by advertising on here. Companies don't advertise for fun they do it to shift more of their products which in this case aint good for kids.

glasnost · 05/03/2011 17:55

You know what Maryz you're irony deficient. And I don't wanna win any fans. The last 2 posts of mine were laudatory of others. There's no pleasing some. I even read the official McD's site link.

Still haven't changed my mind.

Ohforfoxsake · 05/03/2011 18:14

They consult because it might dent their credibility.

MN do some great campaigning. If they let fast food companies advertise on here they will never be able to campaign against childhood obesity which is a growing problem.

I'd love to have MNs thoughts on this so far ...

MilaMae · 05/03/2011 18:25

Totally agree with your last point offs.

Also I have to say the over lying argument for letting McD advertise on here is "I don't care",that surely is no argument for anything.

Some of us do care, what exactly is so heinous about that Hmm?

Panzee · 05/03/2011 19:03

I care in that I don't think it's my place to dictate who MN takes advertising from.
Yesterday it was Nestle, today it's McDs. Who will we try to convince MN to refuse advertising from next?

I boycott Nestle so I like that MN does too. However it's not up to me to tell them to do it. It's nice of them to ask us but I don't think they should.

aristocat · 05/03/2011 19:11

i dont care either

Eleison · 05/03/2011 21:05

I'd be really interested in hearing back from mn. The op doesn't even say whether they are actually being offered a McD ad -- it just says that someone has asked their opinion on it. Would be good to have context for the discussion. Having had all our poinions it would be good if they could give some detail.

Also, here's something that interests me (although it's none of my businessGrin): I think they sign up to advertising streams don't they? Rather than individual ads I mean? Is it the case that by saying no to McD they are unable to accept a whole 'package' of ads? How do these things work?

There seem to be incredibily few ads on mn atm -- just half a dozen incredibly cutesey clothing and hliday retailers and stacks of ads for their own books and their brand endorsements. So I wondered if saying no to a McD ad is preventing them from signing up to a whole package of more mainstream ads.

Eleison · 05/03/2011 21:08

poinions opinions

(They're not having my poinions at any price.) [resolute]

does not seem appropriate but mumsnet is changing....

piprabbit · 05/03/2011 21:34

Did anyone flounce when MNHQ snuggled up with Pizza Express?

A food chain where you can have dough balls and butter, followed by pizza, followed by dough balls and nutella.

Not sure why McDs obesity is so much worse than Pizza Express obesity.

SarfEasticated · 05/03/2011 21:59

'No' and a from me too.

Ohforfoxsake · 05/03/2011 22:00

Are any as prolific as McDs? But it's not just them. It's the attitude to fast food in the western world, and attitudes to food generally post-war. I don't object to it's place on the high street, I'm not happy with it's product placement in reading scheme books (apparently removed but I complained to the publisher then) and I wouldn't be happy with it on here. But its on my boys footy kit as it sponsors the FA. You can't get away from it, so we accept the golden arches and barely consciously notice them. Fast food is so normal. But it's not good food. My argument isn't against Mcds, it's against fast food advertising on here.
I admit I never noticed pizza express on here. But I'd rather sit in a PE restaurant with my children as it bears some semblance to a restaurant. I'd rather go to Pizza Hut than Mcds intact. Wouldn't get a take away from either of them though. So to my mind theres a difference but that is how we use them rather than quality of food.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/03/2011 22:02

piprabbit - no you are misunderstanding middle class kids don't get fat, they thrive Wink

Pizza Express is a better class of lardarse. Grin

Ohforfoxsake · 05/03/2011 22:05

Intact? As opposed to in bits Grin oops

Snorbs · 06/03/2011 10:53

southeastastra, I think it's a touch disingenuous of you to claim that you haven't threatened to leave MN over this. I suggest you refresh your memory with what you posted on nickytwotime's flouncing thread.

If you want to pick this particular advertiser out as your line in the sand while ignoring all the other dodgy advertisers MN has (eg piprabbit's excellent point about Pizza Express) then go ahead, knock yourself out. You'll be missed but no-one's forcing you to stay here.

southeastastra · 06/03/2011 10:56

ahem i told nicky i was with her and i am, to be honest your searching of my name (you have done before iirc) worries me slightly. jeysus some people...

why are you being so personal to me?

southeastastra · 06/03/2011 10:57

anyway have had my say on this subject and would like hq to make a statement. feeling a little put out the they have posted this then left us to it to be honest.

jellybeans · 06/03/2011 11:02

It doesn't bother me at all.

SalandersBro · 06/03/2011 11:02

people search other all of the time, and if snorbs thinks you've been a tad dishonest he can 'call you' on it.

inany case, it isn't compulsory to eat at McDs if they adverise their food here. I ahve never been to CentreParcs, been on a MArk Warner holiday, bought anything from Boden or rhe White Co., or any other of the shite that gets on here.

so, advertise away!!

southeastastra · 06/03/2011 11:06

are you saying me posting 'im with you' as i'm leaving with her? becasue you can take it to mean that (if it suits you)?

i really do feel some people are being very personal about this and rude just because we don't agree.

i have set out my arguments - maybe i should have just left it at my first post becasue others who have said they don't like the idea aren't getting picked and prodded like i am.

glasnost · 06/03/2011 11:19

you think YOU'VE been picked at and prodded at? What about me? Just as well I've got a thick skin and don't fall for it. Buzzlite on t'other thread even went so far as to search me too and refer to a username change. It's slighty weird and - I think - intended to intimidate. You'd think if people were sure of their opinions that they wouldn't be bothered by the minority's objections. Because it seems we ARE in the minority.

southeastastra · 06/03/2011 11:21

no i agree glasnost you have been too - i find the whole thing quite mind boggling
