The media furore of the last few days

Hi all,

Wanted to post about the extraordinary press coverage of the Riven story over the last few days as there's been a bit of speculation about what happened and not all of it accurate.

It's a fact that for the press to get excited about an issue they need a human interest angle (with pictures). Riven's post on Mumsnet was ideal but when it came to engagement with the media, Riven's clear intention throughout was to raise the issue of respite care for all and to shy away from her own story. Of course the press pretty much ignored her because if it hadn't had a dramatic personal angle there would have been no story - it simply wouldn't have made the papers. If Riven hadn't already met David Cameron, it wouldn't have made the front page. It was a perfect storm of a story for a press looking for human interest, evidence of cuts causing hardship and a David Cameron angle to boot.

The extent of our own involvement was to pass on the enormous number of media requests of which, as far as I know, Riven only actually responded to only 2 or 3 and one of those (the Mirror) was because they doorstepped her. I also suggested and drafted her statement post the Mirror piece as she was upset the morning after that they'd skewed what she said to turn it into an NHS cuts story. Once it had appeared in the Guardian and the Mirror as front page news it was lifted plus picture by almost every other broadcaster/paper.

The press found out about the story both because there are plenty of journalists who are MNetters and because Twitter and Facebook were alight with it - and as it turned out, the story was exactly what the media was looking for.

For the record we think Riven and those who got behind her to make a noise about carers should feel proud of what they've achieved in the last few days. I've got no doubt that the Government will tread more carefully around provision of care for those with SN than they did before as a direct result of their action. The feedback we've had from the major charities involved is that they've never had so much press interest in the issue and that they are thrilled that it has at last entered the public consciousness. We've also had tonnes of emails from carers thanking Riven/MNetters for raising the issue.

The intention of this post is to give a clearer understanding of how things evolved and were played out. Please feel free to discuss the issues raised here but we will delete posts that pick over Riven's personal situation because we really don't think that's on given the bombardment she's been under the last few days.

Good post GMS, and indeed Posie

What I have yet to hear is Riven saying poor me / I regret it etc. People are putting words into her mouth.

daisy5678 · 23/01/2011 19:24

I think people assume she'll regret the media overkill, as she's had her privacy lost.

daisy5678 · 23/01/2011 19:25

I don't mean that she should regret it; it wasn't her. Just wish it didn't happen iykwim.

ThePosieParker · 23/01/2011 19:27

Absolutely Peachy, I haven't heard any comment form Riven that wasn't truthful or well intentioned. I also don't think she's a selfish woman who only thinks of herself and the response from all, well most, is a testament to her time and comments on MN.

The response from some has been all rather British, we can't help ourselves building someone up just to knock them down when they achieve something.

Like I have said before awareness of the struggle of carers can only be a good thing.

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 19:37

Giveme I know what people are assuming- but- she seemed OK when I saw her. Tored but OK.

It's for her to decide whetehr she regrets it or not: I think it's probably too soon either way.

Portofino · 23/01/2011 19:53

I mainly hope that Riven is OK, but also feel that this issue has raised a lot positive publicity - for the charities involved in this area, and also raising awareness - even if it is JUST for MNetters - all 600,000 of them.

It has made ME think twice about the realities that some posters face on a day to day basis - and I don't include Riven in that as I have chatted to her on FB. Our dd's were born the same week. I have OFTEN thought about the very big difference in our parenting experience.

Even if this can drive just MNetters to think what they can do, to help, to campaign etc - that would be a wonderful thing.

squeaver · 23/01/2011 20:45

I'm very glad to hear that Peachy.

Northernlurker · 23/01/2011 21:35

I think the cost of all this is too high.
Publicity for a desperate issue - yes good
Public awareness - yes good
Mumsnet posters leaping in without looking where they placed their doubtless lovely feet - not good
A woman's privacy compromised - dangerous and worrying
A vulnerable child's picture in every media outlet in the country and beyond - very regrettable
The plight of a family used as a political football - horrible.

Of course it's up to Riven if she feels it's worth it. It just doesn't look like it from where I'm standing. The other thing that concerns me about this situation is what if her condition worsens to the point where she can't care for dd? What if dd's condition worsens so that she needs on-site medical care? Residential care may be in their future and I don't think it's at all helpful for this to be interpreted as the worst possible option.

MmeLindt · 23/01/2011 21:53

I missed all this discussion and MN-typical bone-gnawing.

While I have every sympathy with Riven, and the invasion of privacy that she has gone through, I do think that we need to stop and think about what this has achieved.

Those who have been campaigning for the rights of carers were delighted with the impromptu campaign and with the resulting publicity.

Riven, and her DD are no longer been mentioned in the press, or just in passing. Another week and it will all be forgotten. But the rise in public awareness for the DLA campaign will hopefully continue.

I was one of those tweeting, but stopped when the Guardian became involved and it became clear that raising awareness was no longer needed. By that point, the whole thing had completely taken off and reached a dimension that I do not really think that many could have envisioned.

A column in the Guardian, a mention by someone like India Knight in the Times - that was what I thought might happen if we could get the right journalist interested. That it would be front page headlines - I absolutely did not think that.

LadyBlaBlah · 23/01/2011 21:57

I know it's really shallow, but I just want to know if Riven is really called Riven. It has been bothering me - is 'Riven' not a talk name?

MissQue · 23/01/2011 22:01

As a carer, I am incredibly grateful to Riven for raising this issue. It's saddening that she has had to go through media and MN scrutiny in the process, but this issue desperately needed some attention, we've only got until Feb 14th, after which the plans will be put into action if we can't kick up enough of a fuss to put enough pressure on to overturn it.

I'm scared about what the planned changes will make to my family, I am one person on my own, and knowing that there are many more in my situation means that we need to get together, because it's easy to ignore one voice in the crowd.

Thank you Riven, and I hope that you are getting the help you need because you deserve it x

Georgimama · 23/01/2011 22:01

I don't think it's giving anything away now to say yes, that is her first name.

2shoes · 23/01/2011 22:04

no it isn't
do you really think a intelligent woman like riven would use her rl name on the www

LadyBlaBlah · 23/01/2011 22:08

Thats exactly the thing 2shoes. I don't want to know her name. I was just bemused by the reporting of her name as if it were her real name.

LadyBlaBlah · 23/01/2011 22:09

Amanda Platell excelled herself in the reporting of the story - she really is quite a hateful being

MissQue · 23/01/2011 22:17

Lorraine Kelly was sympathetic in the Sun yesterday, but on the whole I think female journos can be fucking hideous.

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:28

Anyone who would call their DD Riven needs serious help

(and it ws indeed Riven who said that to me)

2shoes · 23/01/2011 22:33

3000 people will now post saying that is their dd's rl name lol

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:36

And I will sit in judgement and suggest they purchase a dictionary before naming any more children

LadyBlaBlah · 23/01/2011 22:38

"Riven is a puzzle adventure game, the sequel to Myst. Developed by Cyan Worlds, it was initially published by Brøderbund. Riven was distributed on five compact discs and released on October 29, 1997, in North America; it was later released on a single DVD-ROM, with improved audio and a fourteen-minute "making-of" video.[3] In addition to the PC versions, Riven has been ported to several other platforms, including the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and most recently iOS-based devices."

From wiki

It is rather bizarre that not one journalist / news channel picked up that it wasn't her real name Confused

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:42

Um I thought it ws 'rive (r v) v. rived, riv·en (r v n) also rived, riv·ing, rives. v. tr. 1. To rend or tear apart. 2. To break into pieces, as by a blow; cleave or split asunder.

Could be either.

Northernlurker · 23/01/2011 22:50

Tell you what - the more we mention on here, on this open website, on this stickied look at me thread, then the more chance there is that the media will notice that it isn't her real name!
