looks like the oldest extant chats have posts from 6 sept

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 13:50

no that's rubbish they go back at least to beginning of april

JJmumsnet · 15/09/2005 13:58

Threads in _chat are archived after 5 days and deleted after 9,999,999. Other threads are archived after 32 days and deleted after 9,999,999.

The exceptions are noted on the topics themselves - eg media requests aren't archived at all, but deleted after 366 days.

To find threads in the archives, just use the 'search archived messages' link above. (Just in case someone wonders how to do that...)

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2005 14:00

why not wait until 10,000,000....and why that long?

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 14:01

that explains why I thought chat wasn't archived yet they were still there...

morningpaper · 15/09/2005 14:03

I was SURE that there was some agreement a while back that chat threads would be deleted after a certain period of time. I am always at my least discreet in chat threads - now I will have to behave myself!

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 14:03

mp that's what i thought

safe on the chat threads

It's actually delete after 9,999,999 days. Would you like chat threads deleted after a bit sooner than that?

Have emailed tech to ask about the number. He's very optimistic about mumsnet being around for quite a while, I guess.

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 14:13

thats like kinda never then lol

SherlockLGJ · 15/09/2005 14:19

Thats the way I like it.

stitch · 15/09/2005 14:21

maths isn't my thing but that is YEARS!

why that long?

stitch · 15/09/2005 14:25

is there a need to keep threads for that long? surely threads that have had no posts in say six months can be deleted quite happily?

stitch · 15/09/2005 14:26

lth, thats ten million divided by 300,[coz im too lazy to do 365] which is thirty thousand years.

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 14:27

cod i thought i'd worked that out as well, seems we were wrong..and i think others thought it which is why some threads on chat are "sensitive issues"

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2005 14:30

Thanks stitch, I did work out on my calulator but when I saw the 27,6xxxx number I thought "NO that can't be right"

27,000 years.....how pointless!

SherlockLGJ · 15/09/2005 14:31

Then we would lose classics like the Cat and the Football

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 14:39

not if someone adds a post to it every so often

we could have classic post monitor

Fio2 · 15/09/2005 14:40

why do you delete some and not others?

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2005 14:54

I'm sure the site would run smoother if it didn't have to wait 27,000 years to delete stuff.

Tech, I hope you've set the delete thread function on auto pilot because I hate to say it, but I very much doubt you'll be around to press the button when the time finally comes.

That is just the oddest thing I've heard.

zippitippitoes · 15/09/2005 15:04

you have to laugh

what will they make of it in 27 years never mind 27,000

morningpaper · 15/09/2005 17:15

I think that the chat threads should be deleted every couple of years.

Otherwise my children will work out my MN name and find out gory details of my sex life with their father and they will be scarred for life.
