Hiding specific posters...again!

Sorry to bring this up again, I know it's been requested many times.

But in the light of the recent upheaval I've seen a few people reiterate that it would be something they'd benefit from so wondered if the stance may have altered at all.

I understand the thing about threads maybe not making total sense without certain posts but surely that's for the individual to cope with, if they have chosen to ignore someone...also I've seen it on a lot of other forums and it seems to work, I'm not sure how.

It isn't so much the odd post here and there on a thread, anyway...that's fine, I can ignore that. But if someone is really prolific and starts many threads per day, it would be such a relief not to see these all the time in Active threads.

I'd be grateful for an update as to whether you might be considering this option, somewhere on the back burner.

Thanks.

Soupy - shoudl we not have 'hide topic' options either? Is that childish? What if you have already come to virtual blows with someone, but both still wish to continue posting.

k, it's not necessary but it would oil the wheels a bit, that's all.

I do sometimes wonder if I shouldn't be on here at all, because surely things like this should not have an impact really.

people posting 'offensive crap' (example please?) is the norm for most sites surely.

this sounds like you want a perfect forum which doesn't exist.

aristomache · 22/09/2010 20:40

an ignore facility is also the norm for most sites.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2010 20:40

No, i hide topics that are not relevant to me not to hide peoples opinions that differ from mine.

JaneS · 22/09/2010 20:41

Hmm. I think it'd be better to just hide threads individually, myself.

I suppose I'm lucky and I do understand that some threads/topics are going to be incredibly painful to some posters, but imo the downsides outweigh the benefits. I think hiding posters would turn MN into the sort of place where people wouldn't get real support, it'd be more like disengaged chat and some clique members in their own little worlds. That is much 'safer' and less offensive, but there are so many other places on the net to do that, why do it here?

nikkershaw · 22/09/2010 20:41

well piss off to those sites then!

SoupDragon · 22/09/2010 20:41

really? The norm? I've never seen it on any of the sites i post on.

nikkershaw · 22/09/2010 20:42

or start yer own site with only people you ever agree with on it Wink

Marchpane · 22/09/2010 20:42

Step 1. Click on thread.
Step 2. See it has been started by FuckingAnnoyingPosterWhoMakesMyBileRise
Step 3. Click hide thread

Imbecileningles · 22/09/2010 20:43

I would appreciate being able to hide those whom it appears are doing what is known as 'making stuff up'.

OP posts:
aristomache · 22/09/2010 20:43

it isn't relevant for me either(on a forum), but I can see how it would be for some people.

I do use the ignore facility for an online game I play though so I am not tempted to troll-bait(as I know the only reason they troll is to get a response, and I can't respond if I don't see it Grin)

Portofino · 22/09/2010 20:45

Are we all 12 or something? Hmm

tethersend · 22/09/2010 20:47

I would ignore you all so that I can run Mumsnet unchallenged in my mind

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/09/2010 20:48

Is this the MN equivalent of being blanked at the school gate?

wukter · 22/09/2010 20:49

I don't like the idea of having a Started By line beside threads, even if everyone didn't pile into MissPopularRoyalPoster's threads they'd be accused of it.

No, of course we are not all 12 Porto. I like to think we're reasonably mature, well most of us anyway.

But there are always going to be people who start horrible threads, made up threads, threads about wanting to do themselves in, etc etc and some of us find these really upsetting.

I know I do.

I've been told I'm avoided myself, and it would make it easier for that person to be able to hide my threads entirely as well, I imagine.

If everyone who posted was great it wouldn't be an issue but the fact is some people do get troubled by certain posters, either deliberately or incidentally, and I don't understand why this makes us all immature.

OP posts:
wukter · 23/09/2010 11:19

I think tethers makes a very good point.

(on wukternet everyone speaks sense)

DanceInTheDark · 24/09/2010 14:14

no no no no no

It's a horrible thing to do!

There was a poster i had a mild bust up with many years and several different names ago. For a while everything they posted wound me up until i just stopped reading their response or stopped reading treads they had started. After a while, i found i actually liked the poster and it was probably just the fact that we had had a difference of opinion that was making me dislike them.

If you know the poster IRL and they are happy with you knowing their nickname and vice versa then just behave like an adult and get on with it.

Or name change.

Or go to netmums.

(somebody with skills in grammar will come and correct this in a min [tired]Wink)

Hulababy · 24/09/2010 14:21

Just scroll past posters you don't want to read.

Horrid idea IMO. Not what MN is about.

Imagine every prolific poster is feeling somewhat suspicius it is them OP is talking about now!
