I thought we didn't have annoying floating adverts on MN...

...but there it is, that VW superhero ad is now floating. Not only on active convos but right now on this page.
There isnt even an option to get rid of it, usually there is an X but nope, nothing.
It obscures a third of the links at the top of the page.
Its annoying, can we not have it please?

Tee2072 · 31/08/2010 07:02

AdBlock, people. Its your best friend. Never see an ad again.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 08:16

I used to block the ads (not with AdBlock, just by editing the localhosts file) but then I felt guilty about MN's revenue stream. But at this rate I may just start again.

LittleSilver · 31/08/2010 08:23

Glad I'm not the only one; this is REALLY annoying!!!

catinthehat2 · 31/08/2010 08:26

It's unbelievably stupid.

Hi VW!

This won't increase footfall in your dealers, because the advert is so embarassingly crass and misplaced.

HTH.

mummytime · 31/08/2010 08:40

I hate it too! MN get rid of it!

Feenie · 31/08/2010 08:42

Doing my head in here too. Really hate it.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 12:07

I haven't seen it for a couple of hours. Perhaps it's gone?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/08/2010 12:14

Surely adblock won't affect revenue stream - how would it?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 12:18

If the ad impression counter thingy doesn't register a view of the ad then MN don't get credited for your having looked at the ad (reasonably enough, because you haven't). Certainly via the localhosts method, you wouldn't download the ad at all so there wouldn't be a registered view of the ad -- I'm not entirely sure how AdBlock works but imagine it is likely to be similar.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 12:26

Yup, looking at the adblock page it works on the basis of Gecko deciding whether or not to load something.

So if you visit MN with AdBlock turned off and the annoying VW ad comes up, it will count as a view of the ad and MN will get 0.001p or something like that from VW. If you visit it with AdBlock turned on Gecko will stop the ad being loaded, it won't count as a view of the ad and MN won't get the 0.001p.

If you always have AdBlock turned on MN gets no revenue from your visits (unless you follow the sponsored links and/or fill in surveys etc.). If everyone always has AdBlock turned on then MN has no revenue at all and Tech will be turned out into the snow to starve (N.B. for the purposes of this melodramatic illustration it's snowing heavily in August. Just go with it).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/08/2010 15:54

:( I feel guilty now ...

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 16:01

Yes, just look into the adorable faces of Justine and Carrie's poor starving children and tell them about your blissful ad-free existence... Grin

fortyplus · 31/08/2010 23:53

I notice MN Towers hasn't commented on this thread Wink
