why is 'aibu' in ananswered and not 'chat'

Is it because AIBU thread tend to be redundant (i.e. the OP knows they are BU and so does everyone else so no bugger bothers answering?)

Can you explain to an MNHQer of very little brain?

If you review the list of unanswered threads by selecting the link from the top of the page, you will note that there are no chat threads listed, even if there are chat threads without replies.

Threads posted in 'chat' that haven't been answered are not listed in 'unanswered messages'...

Has always bugged me too.

And, erm, I don't know the answer to that one, I'm afraid. I suspect it has some eminently sensible historical reason, though.

I remember the same question being asked and answered before, can't remember what the answer was though. Something sensible but unsatisfying IIRC...

Chat is truncated differently, isn't it? When you search MN, chat appears at the end as '_chat'

I think there was a bit of an uproar when Chat first appeared as a topic and some people did not approve. I thought chat doesn't appear because it was modified so that it didn't clog up the board. But I could be wrong.

Back in the olden days when we used to write our posts on cave walls, people complained about the Chat topic. There were so many threads on there that they swamped the "posts in last hour/day/week" sections - a bit like the For Sale threads have been swamping the "Last 15 minutes" and "New messages" sections. The underscore meant that they were all moved to the bottom of the screen and stopped whingers people complaining."

So basically, chat was not well liked as a concept

Just did a quick search to see if I could find the answer on a previous thread - I didn't, though I did find out that this is the third time sea has started a thread asking this, and we still don't know.

Ironically, one of those threads received no replies, so presumably, not being in Chat, it is now in 'unanswered threads'....

Yes, I remember the hoohah about Chat when it first appeared as a topic but don't remember why it doesn't appear in unanswered - and nor does anyone here at MNHQ today

I think I might have figured this out. Do chat threads get filed in a different place on the server to permanent threads? Could it be that the temporariness of them means they are plonked in a holding file or something and the holding file is not indexed?

And it is: it is a bug - and it shouldn't be happening.

The Techs are on the case and (unanswered) Chat threads should be appearing in Unanswered soon.
