I hope TikTok doesn't leave. I can see that she has helped many mums to successfully get breastfeeding going. However, this site relies on advertising income, do you think the folks at MN HQ have a money tree?

I haven't read this thread or the thread which sparked this but I think a reality check is in order here. The wonderful ladies who have created this site and support it every day have bills to pay. I feel really strongly that we all come on here, use this site as a crutch in life and forget that there are faces behind the running of this site. It is a beast which requires money, time and effort.

I wish you all the best TikTok and reiterate that I hope you dont leave.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 07:54

Mumtosomeone I think that's a different issue. Most women who are told they can't breastfeed, can. They simply need to be given the support to do so, not formula. The fact that the government doesn't prioritise supporting women to breastfeed when they want to, is a separate issue imo.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 07:56

what about the ones that choose not to?

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 07:57

will tik tok hurt milupa by leaving...I think not.
Who is she standing up to and who is she letting down?

moondog · 24/08/2005 08:04

Need to add that I have also contributed extensively to the Special Needs board under another name in my professional capacity as a specialist salt,in case people wonder why Mizmiz is not responding to posts.

It's a very very very sad day for me.

Are us mums so gullible that we'll let one advert change how we want to feed our kids. It's just advertising and it's money that'll go towards keeping MN alive.

So if people want to go let them by all means. It's their choice, none of us need to access this site if we don't want to.

Sorry but this is a parenting site in the internet and we all have valid points to make but it's not the same as real life.

I think it's all getting a bit pompous, lets just get on with it with whoever is around.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 08:08

Well said!

An advert is just that. I never even noticed it until it was mentioned here..never clicked cos it doesnt interest me!

bobbybob · 24/08/2005 08:17

I'm off too, I can't stay while that Aptamil link is there.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 08:17

why?

alux · 24/08/2005 08:50

mumtosomeone: it seems like you have not read tiktok's reasons for leaving before using words like 'pompous' I acknowledge not to describe her but to describe the feelings of so many others here.

there ARE a lot of young, underinformed mothers who visit mumsnet and find their way into b/fing thru this site - myself included (though not young) If I had clicked and seen the Milupa ad back when I was struggling, I would have thought it was an endorsement by a website I respected.

The tone of your posts indicate to me that you have not taken the time to read or, if you have, understood the multilayers of issues why so many, bottlefeeders included, find this ad deceitful.

It is NOT about being gullible, it is about reaching women when they can be desperate and vulnerable to suggestion. I know. I have been there and in my 'real' life few would describe me as gullible or vulnerable.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 08:51

I never said pompous....cant spellit!!!

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 08:54

Dont think this was to me!!!
If you decide to go off on one please direct it at the right person!

If it was to me I do not remember typing any of the mentioned and appologise!!!

did say not read all of thread or advert though

SoupDragon · 24/08/2005 08:55

I think the ad should carry a disclaimer about it being an advert and not a recommendation by MN and also the standard wording that seems to appear on follow on ads about breasstfeeding being best for the first 6 months of your baby's life.

Lizzylou · 24/08/2005 08:58

I had honestly never seen/noticed this advert before these threads emerged.
I understand that for some this is a question of ethics and their beliefs, but personally I am not offended by the adverts' existence at all

tissy · 24/08/2005 09:03

it was ssd who used the term "pompous".

ssd- yes, Mums are that gullible unfortunately, that's why Milupa and other companies will pay money to place their ads, they know the effect the ads will have. If a Mum who is struggling to feed her baby reads that site and thinks formula is almost as good, the incentive to keep up with bf will have weakened. Once that mum is hooked then she will spend a fortune on formula, follow-on milk (which just isn't necessary at all)and all those ultra-convenient baby meals.

They know exactly what they are doing, and they employ psychologists to make sure they do it right....

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:05

It gets a bit tiring having to explain over and over again to people who can't be bothered to read the thread, why some of us disapprove of the ad.

Sort of feels like going around in circles.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:06

Nobody is saying that mothers are influenced by one ad. Was it on this thread or another that I've talked about the long term drip drip affect of advertising and promotion?

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:06

sort of feel ticked off!!!
Stands in a corner

Eaney · 24/08/2005 09:06

Some adverts are not very effective at achieving what they set out to do. We all know ads which you see regularily yet alwas forget hat they are advertising. I think this Milupa ad is one of them.
I BF, but don't particularily enjoy it, and when I had a quick look at the site I found it quite persuasive to continue with BFing. I suspect this is not what they intended but then again I think perhaps they may well have to go back to the drawing board.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:07

mts!

basketcase · 24/08/2005 09:07

think alux meant ssd, mumtosomeone

this is such a sad thread to read (I mean that in the unhappy sense of the word - not the slang).

I can see that a lot of people feel very strongly about this ad campaign and admire them standing by their convictions. I hope that once this ad campaign is finished, that it will have created enough revenue for mumsnet to look to other means of advertising for money such as baby clothes or moon cup and that all those who have left will feel able to rejoin andgive us the benefit of their company soon xx

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:07

do I get an appoligy then?
oh out of corner now..just realised its not pc!

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:09

just a thought...but isnt us talking about it having the affect they want..people being aware?
I hadnt even noticed it till now!

SoupDragon · 24/08/2005 09:09

Eaney, you don't need to know what they're advertising, you just need to remember their name so that when you stand in front og a formula shelf looking at all the boxes, you think "ooom, Milupa...". That's the only reason they have set up this "pro breastfeeding" website and all the other stuff that goes with it.

tissy · 24/08/2005 09:11

basketcase, definitely think that the mooncup manufacturers should pay up for all the free advertising they get on here!
