well my opinion is, mumsnet is first and foremost a business, they need people to advertise to make money to pay for server costs etc. It is a parenting site afterall and formula is known by everyone anyway, why would an advert change anyones opinion of what they were doing, if you have a brain it doesnt. Perspective needs to be got i think and i support mumsnet anyhow in their decisions

moozoboozobillynomates · 24/08/2005 09:12

Hear hear Fio.

Toothache · 24/08/2005 09:12

Unbelievable!

Formula milk exists.... loads of people use it..... it's not something TERRIBLE and cancer causing like smoking.... LOADS of people bottle feed and loads of people that breastfeed eventually give their baby some formula.

To suggest that this website shouldn't advertsie formula is a disgrace IMHO! This site should represent everyone that uses it and........ this may make some of you shudder but most Mumnsetters probably use formula at some point in their child rearing years.

I am totally dismayed by this thread.

I haven't read it all though, so if I've repeated stuff then i'm sprry.

Personally there are many things that I think should NEVER appear on MN.... but an advert for formula milk????? COME ON!

It is a peronal choice as to what you feed your child and I'm insulted at many attitudes on here that clearly have absolutely NO CONCEPT of this.

emily05 · 24/08/2005 09:14

think the ad is cheeky - but have to totally agree with Fio2. Tescos offend me more to be honest!

emily05 · 24/08/2005 09:16

Toothache - I was thinking along the lines of what you have said but was far too intimidated to say!

Eaney · 24/08/2005 09:16

SD, yes I understand the brandawareness trick but hasn't the ad backfired if I never look for formula because they have persuaded me that BFing is best.

I don't enjoy BFing but I understand the benifits but sometimes when I waver, reading something like the Milupa info just makes me feel guilty about stopping. Perhaps my response is not common.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:16

Er, actually toothache, advertising formula milk is unlawful.

So the idea that it's a disgrace not to have an unlawful ad on the site is a little odd. I don't think Mumsnet would go in for illegality.

EvesMama · 24/08/2005 09:18

sorry to be ignorant..but is this saying that it is illegal to advertise formula milk?

tissy · 24/08/2005 09:18

yes

Fio2 · 24/08/2005 09:18

look its a website, THEY can do what they like, they could turn off the chat board tommorrow if they so wish. i think its high time we stopped dictated to mumsnet what we want and dont want and trying to make every single little thing into a moral argument. It is an advert, mumsnet need sponsors to stay afloat. i think that is the only issue

basketcase · 24/08/2005 09:19

tissy, I agree. I can?t believe that I have bought one and actually excited about using it
that is definite example of the drip drip advertising if ever there was one. When I first read about it (on here, not in shops) I was not impressed and felt definitely uncomfortable about it. Slowly noticed it on more and more threads, people discussing benefits, comfort etc. Noticed it in Boots, read the back and thought that it didn?t sound so threatening now - had become more aware and relaxed about it IYKWIM and soooo bought one.
Same with formula - when I stopped bf, which one did I buy? none from any adverts that I was aware of - the one that I felt most comfortable buying - totally emotional response to an impulse "right, thats it" late night tearful shop. Used it exclusively for DD1. Looking back, I think it was because I could remember all the SMA tins in our garage that my mum used for youngest sibling, dad uses as paint cans..Familiarity is an amazing thing - hence why companies are happy to spend loads of money on "non adverts" like this just to get the brand name into our heads in a drip drip way. Doesn?t matter if you think you are intelligent and better than all that - it works long term, fact.
Why do many people initially buy heinz beans over any other brand = because they were the ones advertised for years and years off the telly when you were little, making you think they were the only ones worth buying, the relationship you have built up with the product makes it sit more comfortably with you over any over can - even if it costs more, you believe it is better somehow...
That is why these adverts make so many of us uncomfortable.

marthamoo · 24/08/2005 09:19

As tiktok says in her eloquent explanation of why she is leaving..

Toothache · 24/08/2005 09:20

Caligula - Advertising formula milk is illegal???? Since when????? I really don't understand your post.... if its illegal then why is it on MN?

Either way this is insulting to those who choose to formula feed..... I can't believe this reaction. Why are people making out that this is something SO TERRIBLE????

I really don't get it. And don't appreciate the sarcastic er either!

SoupDragon · 24/08/2005 09:21

It's illegal to advertise infant formula. Which is why they invented follow on milks for 6 months plus.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:22

MM, someone posted a link last night with a Philip Morris website advising people how to give up smoking and stop their kids from smoking.

You couldn't make it up.

Lizzylou · 24/08/2005 09:22

I do agree with Toothache, but understand why many are annoyed with the sneakiness of the ad (getting round the fact that is illegal to advertise formula whilst "promoting" breastfeeding) and that it jars with many people's ethics and beliefs. That said, many people had not even noticed the ad before these threads were started.

SoupDragon · 24/08/2005 09:22

And it's why a formula milk company has created a "por breastfeeding" website. Name recognition.

tissy · 24/08/2005 09:22

it's a sneaky way of getting round the law. They're not saying "buy this formula", they're not allowed; they're saying, " if you can't breastfeed then our formula is best". As we've already seen their "counsellors" on the helpline push formula, when presented with a bf problem. It's underhand.

Em32 · 24/08/2005 09:22

I have to agree with toothache on this one.....

Eaney · 24/08/2005 09:23

But don't you think sometimes adverts don't work. I know the general cocept behind marketing but surely some ads work well and some not so well.

Fio2 · 24/08/2005 09:24

fwiw i dont even look at the home page and couldnt care less but mumsnet needs money to pay for the server and everything else, it really isnt any of our business

Toothache · 24/08/2005 09:25

As I mentioned in my post.... I haven't had time to read the whole post.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 09:25

and as i said before..Its up to tiktok to do as she feels fit..but she will not upset milupa by leaving mumsnet..they wont know or care...so why is she hurting the people that obviously do!

oliveoil · 24/08/2005 09:26

Moondog - no need for that language this early in the morn purlease.

I really can not see the fuss on this at all. I didn't even know about this ad until all this thread.

I will have to renew my subs though.

Caligula · 24/08/2005 09:26

Toothache sorry but if you want to debate it, please read the threads - no one has suggested it's terrible to formula feed. If you read the threads, you'll find out what the objections are to this ad - Basketcase and MM have just posted 2 more good arguments about it.

And Soup's right, sorry I wasn't clear. Am trying to type quickly so I can get away and do some work!
