i'm going to call tmorrow as well if possible.

hunkermunker · 23/08/2005 20:44

Don't worry, RTKM, I'm able to talk endlessly about it

LIZS · 23/08/2005 20:44

waterfalls the ads you see are for the Follow Ons (ie suitable from 6 months plus) not infant formula - that would be illegal. They use these establish their brands in the minds of mums to be.

sunchowder · 23/08/2005 20:45

I wasn't directing that at you HUNKER!!!

RTKangaMummy · 23/08/2005 20:45

oke doke HM

sunchowder · 23/08/2005 20:46

Without resorting to gossip, I can't tell you who I was directing it to!!!

now if only breasts came with instructions....

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 20:47

I'm off - I just can't get excited about it.

happy wrangling!

hercules · 23/08/2005 20:48

The trouble is the way some of the ingredients are made isnt particularly appetising so a book with everything in it would put people off.

I needed advice re formular and got the advice from my health visitor. I had to change brands and had some problems, which turned out ok but ds was unwell at first. So I think there sometimes is a need for information about formular - more than is suplied on the packet!
When you are a first time mum everything is new.

I also agree that this is underhanded advertising. It is a shame that a mumsnet member has to leave over this.

hercules · 23/08/2005 20:49

What advice were you given?

emily05 · 23/08/2005 20:57

hercules - think you are asking me, excuse my rambling if you are not!
my health visitor was great. The teat ds was using was causing him to have wind - so she recommended this posh teat (cant remember the name) which was a really slow flow. The brand we first used gave him an upset tummy - although didnt realise it was that until spoke to health visitor - changed brand and was ok. to be honest if I hadnt have been advised by health visitor wouldn't have realised.

must say that she was also good at information about breastfeeding when I needed it - and my hospital have breast feeding support groups and fact sheets. so on both fronts recieved help and info

QueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2005 20:58

Just one other thought - did I see someone say that the MN team would be dicussing the issue of the ad when they all get back (from where ever they are?).

Surely before making any rash decision to leave she should wait until they've had their meeting???

edam · 23/08/2005 20:58

Can't remember which formula manufacturer it was, but one of them got into trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority for an attempt to get round the advertising ban not that long ago.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for raising this, we do take your points about formula advertising, it's not easy and it is something we've thought long and hard about. Whilst this is obviously an attempt by a formula company to promote their brand we are pretty sure mumsnetters will not be persuaded to switch to formula as a result of this campaign. Further they are offering some interesting events for mums and naturally paying mumsnet a not insignificant amount for doing it - one that really will pay the server bills for a good few months.

We did this raise the issue of advertising a while back and after a lot of input from folks we kind of came up with a policy of "we'll take their ads but not allow them to sponsor us" policy for formula companies and others who some folks, though by no means all, were wary of.

So on balance we thought it was ok host these ads but we might be wrong and we do certainly value your thoughts so keep em coming and we promise to discuss again when all the team are back from their travels (Signing off myself now for a couple of weeks now - have fun all ).

QoQ, I doubt she wants to be here while the ad is running.

thanks misdee - thought I'd seen somehwere written that they were going to discuss again

As an aside - would she still leave if the image wasn't there? After all there's no mention at all of milk (of any description) in the blurb next to it...

CountessDracula · 23/08/2005 21:04

actually hunkermunker I wanted to know a lot and no one could tell me a thing. I was not allowed to even try breastfeeding and knew in advance that this was the case. I have a history of allergies and autoimmune probs in the family and I wanted to know which milk would suit me best. I don't see why this information shouldn't be evaluated and reported upon. If one manufacturer is able to say some milk is for hungrier babies then why not some is better for potentially allergy prone ones?

I am rather miffed by the way you dismiss my dismay at lack of info. It is typical however of the way I have been treated all along (including by people on mn!) for being unable to breastfeed, as if that somehow means that my feelings on the topic are invalid.

QueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2005 21:05

edam - she could just do what I do - come straight to "talk" (I have the talk page set up in my favourites and have to confess I visit the homepage once ia blue moon........usually when I click the wrong button getting over zealous trying to click "all topics" )

I'd like to back CD up on this, partly because I agree she (and others) get an awful lot of stick from a decision which wasn't actually a decision at all; and also to say that actually, when I wanted to switch to mixed feeding when DD1 was a few months old I felt incredibly at a loss wandering along the supermarket shelves.
