May I also add that tiktok has never condemned bottlefeeders. She made the point very recently (I can't find it now-damn!) that impartial information about formula, bottles, teats and so on would be good. Trouble is it doesn't exist as there companies are only interested in parting you from your money.

Have a look at her comments in the two recent threads on this topic with the word Aptimil in the title. Makes interesting reading, regardless of your feeding choice.

oops trying again aptamil thread

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 19:40

Confused? you will be!

And yes, I never look at the home page either and now I have

moondog · 23/08/2005 19:40

Pruni,I started the thread because I thought this was the best way for the powers that be to understand how posters felt, whichever side of the fence they choose.

tiktok, dont go. i understand your reasons, but we will miss you

MistressMary · 23/08/2005 19:42

Sorry haven't looked at the homepage since - um registering.

alux · 23/08/2005 19:43

never looked at the aptamil ad but will now.

edam · 23/08/2005 19:46

This is extremely sad. I respect Tiktok's decision as I imagine this is an ethical issue for her. But it's a crying shame.

Sleepysuzy, Aptamil are trying to influence mothers because they can't advertise formula milk forf babies under six months legally. The ad on this site is a way for them to get round the ban and promote their product.

I can see why Tiktok, who has devoted many hours of her time to supporting women who want to breastfeed, and supporting women who have difficulties in feeding, would want to leave over this. I do hope MN HQ reconsiders and Tiktok feels able to come back.

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 19:48

at last! so you can't advertise formula milk for babies under 6 months? didn't know that!

they hand it out at clinics though (or they did in my day )

RTKangaMummy · 23/08/2005 19:48

The homepage is my home page but I have not noticed the advert and so went to find it just now

I usually come straight to talk and only look for adverts if I am looking for a particular company

Sorry tiktock if you feel you have to leave

How many people who post here or on the other parts of the site actually PAY the SUBS???

I am sure there are loads who are here and on other parts that don't contribute

LIZS · 23/08/2005 19:54

JoolsToo - that is also why Follow On milks came about to get around the ban on advertising formula "first" milks. It can work out cheaper than first formulas but the nutritional benefits of switching from that or certainly breastfeeding are debatable since most babies are being weaned onto solids then too. Similarly retailers are not supposed to promote or have price reductions on formula for under 6 month olds.

SleepySuzy · 23/08/2005 19:55

Ok, thanks, I have now read the whole of the aptamil thread and can totally understand where Tik Tok is coming from. I have also heard a lot of bad press about Nestle, and have heard some of the 'inside' arguments.

SleepySuzy · 23/08/2005 19:57

Just read your post Edam. Thanks. I have to agree with Tik Tok. You can't stand on your own, but if people stick together maybe they will listen?

alux · 23/08/2005 19:57

I can see why TikTok is upset. I am one who benefited from her wisdom and along with other exprienced b/f mums on here. Otherwise I would have given up at 3 wks. I can see how the 'helpline' at aptimil could have hooked me in.

I also see the copycat mumsnet website they are setting up as a nonstarter - and they know it. It is just a vehicle to advertise their product directly to mums with babies under 6 months.

Doesn't look like they invested much time, effort and money in setting it up. I got all the info I read out of the freebie infopak the midwife gave me.

Aragon · 23/08/2005 19:58

For everyone annoyed with Milupa (but not with Mumsnet for taking an ad).

It might be worth putting your comments in writing to Trading Standards.

Mumsnet are not in the wrong but Milupa are with their advice which undermines breastfeeding to the extent that anyone reading their ad will have seen that they "lead the way in making their milk as close to breastmilk as possible".

It's rubbish - formula will never ever compare to breastmilk and Milupa are breaking the marketing code for infant formula by saying so.

And I am not a member of the breastapo - I bottlefed my DS after problems with breastfeeding.

Formula milk does an adequate job of feeding a baby, they are all pretty much alike although you may find one suits your baby better than another. Your baby will grow and develop normally with formual milk and if that's what you've chosen and that's what you are happy with then great.

They give NONE of the benefits of breastmilk

antibodies,
perfectly designed for your baby,
decrease in the risk of breast and ovarian cancers for the Mum in later life (although not total prevention sadly)
Less risk of obesity
Decrease in the risk of cardiovascular disease and some cancers for baby in later life.
etc etc etc.........

A formula company should never be allowed to get away with advertising their milk as "close to breastmilk". It's not and never will be.

Sorry to see you go tiktok - will miss your advice.

hercules · 23/08/2005 20:00

This is awful, . Tiktok must have helped hundreds of women.

CountessDracula · 23/08/2005 20:14

Can I just say as someone who couldn't breastfeed I would really have welcomed somewhere where I could have got advice on formula. I'm not saying through the companies themselves, but some independent medical analysis of the different formula milks available and recommendations. It was impossible to get this.

I do think that this site linked to from the web page is fairly good in it's promotion of breastfeeding though. Some of us do have to use formula you know, it isn't necessarily an option!

RTKangaMummy · 23/08/2005 20:16

agree CD

bunny2 · 23/08/2005 20:29

me too CD - was about to post something similar

QueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2005 20:32

How many threads do you think we'll get about her leaving???

And the big question - will she actually flounce - and if so how long for??

SoupDragon · 23/08/2005 20:33

Please stop using stupid words like "breastapo". It's insulting.

SleepySuzy · 23/08/2005 20:33

BTW, has she actually gone then?

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 20:34

Agree CD - I'm a bit shocked at the anti-feeling toward Milupa - unless I'm missing something aren't they just producers of forumla feed?

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 20:35

sorry got forums on the brain!
